Go and get some seafoam and run that in you engine. It works really well. my engine has never run so good. You can get it at napa auto parts or online.

....and the occasional Italian tuneup.

(definition: Floor the hell out of it to redline from time to time in second...third...but beware, third can run out to over 90MPH...so do it on the track please)

So an overhaul is not necessary to get all the internal parts clean?

I also ran seafoam through my engine, It seemed to clean the carbon well. And its fun because TONS of smoke come out as it cleans. But some words of caution:

1.) if your engine is old and abused like mine was, the carbon deposits may be the only thing sealing the valves, and if you "clean" them out, you may start burning alot of oil and loose some compression.

2.) when you dislodge all the carbon, it goes out your exhaust, this will clog your O2 sensor and perhaps even catalytic convertor. You will need to replace your O2 sensor and plugs after cleaning you engine.

I did this as part of a tune up when I first bought my car a lil over a year and a half ago. At first there seemed to be a slight increase in performance, but that was probably due to the new plugs, fuel filter, and O2 sensor. After "cleaning" my engine out it started to burn alot of oil at startup and high revs, but lately its oil consumption has dropped off a bit, I think I can attribute that to carbon building back up in my engine and sealing the gaps, because I haven't done anything else to try and stop it.

Seafoam is insane. I ran that stuff through my friend's Miata and it made some awesome clouds. During the drive from my house to an uninhabited area, we pretty made the whole neighborhood look like it had been in a fire... hell, even the kids playing outside yelled "WOOOOWWW!!!!!!" It was like doing a burnout.... in motion! My friend claimed his throttle response improved, but in his next smog check, he failed it and had to replace the cat.

yeah, that stuff is crazy. I didn't drive anywhere, I just revved it in the driveway, but it looked like the whole neighborhood was in a dense fog when I was done. DIE ozone DIE!

And I would imagine that all the crap that makes the smoke deposited on his cat and clogged it. catalytic convertors are overrated anyway...
