Erratic KA

I have a 91 SE w/ 150K...I've replaced fuel filter, plugs, 02 sensor and have removed the AIV components.

Sometimes it will idle just fine...most of the time it will hang around 1K and will surge anywhere up to 2.5K...sometimes it will rev from 1K to 2K repeatedly almost like I was tapping the gas...

Does the KA have a PCV valve? What else effects/controls idling?

I don't know if it's related or not, but today for just 5 minutes, when I wasn't giving it gas the RPMs would just drop and the engine would die. If I gave it a little gas, it would stay alive and the engine would stutter a little, if I gave it full gas it seemed fine...

Okay I am totally not flaming you or anything...I would just say that you should run a search on here for maybe like "stalling" or "rough Idle" see what you can find, then you could also check the FAQ section at 240SX.ORG I just don't know how to fix your EXACT problem and I had an idle problem and these tactics helped me out a lot and have nice detail!

well, before when my bro had his black 240, it would do the same thing, i think it was because he had a vacuum leak. maybe you should also clean out your throttle body and maf sensor. its worth a shot.

So just take off the intake piping from the throttle body, and spray inside? When the car is idling?

Yes, take the intake pipe off and spary some carb cleaner WHILE the engine is off, then put the intake back on, start it up ..

Im pretty sure you DO NOT want to try and clean or spray anything in your MAFS. Use throttle body cleaner/spray and spray it inside and use a old clean toothbrush and scrub arround inside, open the butterfly and scrub down there too. After you are satisfied with your cleaning job put it back together. My KA did the same idle thing but I didnt get as high of a idle as your discribing. Yes there is a PCV valvle and DO NOT buy it from autozone or kragen, get it from the dealer only. I bought one cheapy one and it made my car worse, im assuming they sold me the wrong one but after that I bought the Nissan one and it worked fine. On my 16v its located under the intake manifold. The only way I could access it is by taking the fiberish shield under the car off, removing the alternator and trying to stick my hand in there from as far towards the front of the car as I could, its a very very tight space to work in plus to top it off you have to take a hose off the end of it as well wich wasnt fun. I replaced the hose while it was out since it was dried and cracked. The part and the extra hose probly cost me $15. My chilton manual (as much as it sucks and isnt specific to our car) says that it should be changed/inspected every 30k miles. Im pretty sure mine was NEVER changed untill I did it at like 108k. Hope this helps.

check the little pvs like pipe that connects ur intake pipe to the valve cover...mine had a slit and when touched it would idle and die...so i put soem breathers on there and violA not more stutter to sudden needless death...but if that is not the case i think ur usin cheap as gas..maybe some watered down crap...cuz my engine is very picky about gasoline octane...u should check and test different gas octane for ur picky car...ive known a couple 240 owners with ka and sr and they each have their own gas station they prefer...losers..lol

Yeah, that pipe is cracked....You said you added some breathers? What is that? So you removed that pipe?
