KA Rev Limiter kicking in at 5,000rpm?

I have a stock KA...nothing done to it. I had a starting problem a few days ago and found what looked to be a starter kill under my dash...only thing is it was one SMALL harness only wired into the starter signal wire. I removed it and wired the starter signal wire back together. I also think I was having a problem with the starter relay (blue relay located behind passenger headlight). I pulled it off shook it and kinda banged it around and put it back in and the car fired right up.

Now for some unknown reason my rev limiter is kicking in at just above 5,000rpms. No check engine light, no other symptoms at ALL. Just rev limiter at 5,000rpms.

Any ideas?!

Well I could always say that the motor runs out of breath at 5500 so just shift but you probably are looking for a fix.

I would say check the grounding. Ignition problems usually manifest at lower rpm for bad ground but....

Otherwise I would have to guess that something screwy is going on with your ECU

Is this on an S14? My brother has the same problem on his 95 SE manual. We tried switching ECU's with no luck. My guess is that the car think some how thinks its in 5th gear (the speed limiter kicks in around RPM in 5th) so maybe one of the tranny sensors is faulty. If you find out the problem please post because you are not the only one dealing with this pain in the arse.

It's actually an S13. Some guys from FreshAlloy were telling me to check my 5th gear sensor so maybe that's what the prob is!!!

I recently just pulled/reinstalled the starter so maybe I knocked the sensor loose somehow...

I remember seeing a sensor on the trans and the rubber boot had fallen off the plug so I pushed it back onto the plug...but other then that I don't think I touched anything else. Do you know which sensor the 5th gear sensor is?

problem fixed guys.

Turns out the sensor that I pushed the little rubber boot back onto was the 5th gear sensor. I guess one wire was REAL loose and broke while doing so and connected to the other wire thus connecting that circuit.

Solution: unplug sensor.

Jack up the car and crawl under it on the passenger side. You will see your transmission casing and RIGHT smack dab in the middle of it you'll see a sensor coming out the side of it. It's pretty much all by itself. Just unplug the harness going to the sensor. It'll cause no damage unplugged. The rubber boot is on the sensor.

what is the sensor for? even if it causes no damage, I want to know what I'm unplugging.

can you tell me exactly where that fifth gear sensor is though? I'd rather just fix that instead of gettin ghetto unpluggin sensors and shit.

The 5th gear sensor is plugged into the transmission. It tells the ECU when you are in 5th gear as far as I know. It a redundant check to make sure you aren't going over the speed limit (~116mph)

so is that the plug in the transmission you're telling me to remove? so effectively I'll be removing my speed limiter?

Simply unplug the HARNESS, don't touch the sensor. There is a plug about 2-3" off of the sensor.

This WILL not remove your speed limiter. It is simply a redundant check to make sure you are not going above 116mph.

And it used for the cruise control, if the car is so equipped...

Unplugged sensor = no cruise control. ECU needs to know you're in 4th or 5th to activate the cruise.

My sparco steering wheel didn't come equipped with cruise control buttons so I guess there is no use worrying about not having cruise control anymore.
