Most good shops charge around $1500 to paint the whole car. (Atlest in South Carolina)

Painting a car isn't that hard or labor intensive, it's the prep work. So look around paying upwards to 1000-1400 for a full paint job. It'll also cost extra to have dents pulled and dings repaired, so look into paying more if your car has a lot of blemishes.

My $0.02

It'll cost you about $75 for paint and clearcoat if you wanna paint the car yourself. You'll also need to set aside another $15 for bondo and sandpaper. Here's the route I took: I went ahead and sanded my whole car down with 400grit paper. I then filled in dents and scratches with bondo. Afte the bondo cured for 24 hours, I sanded it down to match up with the surface of the car and primed that area. I then resanded the car with 1500 grit sandpaper. It took me around 12 hours total to do this. After I got that done I got it painted for $300 and have had no problems so far with the quality of work.

Hey bro, got any pics? I was just wondering how your job came out afterwards (the prep job that is). Did you go with Maaco?

Here's a pic a couple hours before I took it to the body shop. The red shit all over the lip was bondo that I hadn't primed over yet. The previous owner liked humping parking blocks apparently.
Nah, I didn't go to Maaco, I got it painted at a little redneck body shop near my house in LA (Lower Acton)

Forgot to attach the image.

Ian, I know you can buy paint from Sherwin Williams, or anyother paint stores. I know the body shop that painted my car uses Sherwin Williams paints on all their applications.

If you're looking for a color chart this thread has a 240SX color chart showing both color names and paint codes for all model years in the US. The attachment is about halfway down the page.

I'm painting my car in a week or so - right now it's red and I can't decide between gray and black - maybe flat black.
