Turbo upgrade question

I just bought a used T67 turbo kit for my SR20, and my question relates to the air intake on such a large turbo. Please bear with me, as I still have a lot to learn about turbos and motors in general. Most all pictures I see of similar big turbo upgrades just show the turbo with an exposed turbine wheel, with no type of intake pipe or air filter. I'm guessing this is a horrible idea for normal driving, correct? Also, how is it possible to run your car like this without having the MAFS before the turbo? Can you eliminate the need for a MAFS through ECU tuning/replacement? Please share some knowledge. thanks.

if you replace the computer with a MAP (pressure based) system then you can run open like that.

SR motor set/clip $2500+, FMIC kit $700+, Downpipe $100+, 3" exhaust $500+, Misc install parts $100+, Shop labor for install $1000+ and you still only make 220rwhp for $5000
so what's so CHEAP about the SR swap again?

you can also goto a blow thru design with the MAF infront of the TB.

No air filter is only used for race stuff. you get any thing hitting those blades whn they're spining and POOF turbo be gone.
