Oil Light On/Flickering

Well I have a 92 240sx and lately my cars oil light has been on or flickering while driving.I'm assuming my oil isn't running properly through the engine, could it be possible that my oil pick up is bad or something else? Thanks in advance.

Stop driving the car, get an oil pressure gauge and make sure its not a bad oil pump. If you dont see more than 7 psi at idle and if it doesnt go up with the RPM...kiss the pump goodbye. If you dont fix it and you keep driving it, you're rod could potentially make new oil drains for you.

lol thanks flip will do tomorrow morning, love the wording on "you're rod could potentially make new oil drains for you." I do know it is a time consuming job but also if it might be my oil pump are their any write ups on zilvia or the net anywhere? I can't seem to find any through google.

That light is kind of a "too late" one. If it really is not a faulty sender problem, you have already started to grind down every bearing in your engine...

Would it be possible to tell if my sending unit is bad by simply unplugging it and starting the engine ?

I got a new oil drain right around cylinder #3 from an intermittent oil light one time.

Listen to the people above! I'm telling you right now, I had the same flickering oil light and it wasn't joking but I was too young and dumb and figured it was a faulty sensor.

check your level, check the sensor, but likely... the oil pressure REALLY IS that low...

This is the biggest 240 site on the net, these guys know their shit.... listen and take heed, cause if you don't, you'll be posting up in this thread later stating your engine is dead....

thru experiance don't drive your car till you find out the problem. I had another car before and have the same problem flickering and all thought it was just a sensor I even stopped to buy a extra quart of oil and dump some in thinking maybe it was low on oil which it wasn't I drove for another 10mins or so then boom my motor got messed up. Found out it was the Oil pump

Simple thing is to get a damn oil pressure gauge and do what flip mentioned. Want further advice come back and report what the gauge read.

If the gauge reads pressure fine, it could be a faulty sensor. That's how you can start actually diagnosing your issue, but if you keep asking the same questions it's not going to help.

If you think its a faulty sensor, you borrow a sensor from somebody and see if it does the same thing. You can kinda cheat for a bit to get the pressure up by running thicker oil if the pump is going out but still, dont try to drive it.

When this kind of pump produces more pressure, it also produces less flow. Using thicker oil increases pressure and decrease flow ... but if there is nearly no flow, i dont think it will help. I would just verify the level again and again to make sure there is enough, changing the oil pressure switch for a known working one and try again. I would not top up until the problem is known. If it had oil delivery failure because there was not enough oil, then engine is fooked either way, so no point in wasting oil.

And if it lights up again there already is engine damage. If it does not ... then you know it was a faulty sensor.
