s13 how to crack open s13 hud cluster and rewind milage?

Planning to do a hud conversion on my base coupe with 131k miles but it'd be ugly to see the incorrect mileage from a 175k mile se

Is it possible to crack open the cluster and go ahead and rewind the odo to match the actual miles of my coupe? If so, what tools are needed?

Even if i knew, i would not tell anyone about it. The way you ask for it sounds like a crappy excuse too... It would "look ugly" ? How exactly would that be ugly ?

I did it to my cluster to reflect the true chassis mileage. Its very intricate and tedious. To remove the spindle of numbers you have to bend the little metal tab up. When you bend it up you have to bend it back down when you install the new set of numbers. This little tab can only take so many bends before you'll break it off, so you don't have many chances to fail at aligning it correctly and getting the gears to mesh properly.

Took me many hours to get it perfect. The key is study it carefully and work very slowly.

I have a near mint coupe with exceptional miles, it looks too good to be 175k, I'm just trying to retain its original feel while driving and looking at the speedo.. its not like I'm illegally trying to rewind the odo just to fool some kid on craigslist to make some profit, I'd be insane if I let go of a near mint white coupe that I bought for only $1500..

So I can just take the spindle of numbers off my original cluster and replace the one on the hud cluster I'm planning to install?

Anybody come across a write up anywhere? Detailed images would help..

you do realise its illegal right? i know how to do it. my uncle taught me when I was 11. but it was my brother odometer went out and we moved the mileage up to be more accurate. its not easy. you could easily damage it. I think your excuse for wanting to roll back your mileage is completely pathetic. i hate when 240 owners think their car is the fucking best thing in the world. if your car has 175k your car has 175k. its just a 240

its nothing special.

Before removing the numbers you will want to put a little strip of tape across them otherwise when you take it out they will fall out of order.

Slow down turbo. Most of these cars odometer are exempt. If I bought a car with 65,000 miles, I don't want to look at an odometer that's got 175,000 miles.

I just put a cluster in my car with lower miles on it than the car actually has. Is that illegal too? My old cluster quit working so thats not why i did it. I dont see how its a crime. Hell i bought a truck with 395xxx miles on it that runs great but carfax said it has an odometer discreprancy on it. I guess it probably has a couple million miles on it?

Just help the guy or keep out. The legality thing has been brought up so there is no reason in beating a dead horse. We could trash 90% of all threads on here telling people that they are breaking emissions lawswith their performance upgrades, dot laws with their jdm lights, bumpers ect. Even minium headlight height with a lowered fastback.

What he said, and to the people complaining "why" or "who cares" and "it's just a 240sx" some of us would like to keep track if our mileage, and if it's just a 240sx, why did you buy one and keep modifying it? I would like some info on this because I may have to replace my cluster and I also care to match my mileage and keep track of it.

If you want to keep track of you mileage, get a pic of each cluster when swapping them. Job done.

You could simply swap over your old odometer to the new cluster.

Changing the mileage on a cluster is illegal... Ppl still do it anyway and as far as if your original stops working and you get a new one that's perfectly fine....

If you ever sell your car make sure your remember the original mileage for DMV

I don't know how people haven't figured it out by now but you can just unscrew your odometer number cylinder and swap the units. You don't have to roll numbers around or spend hours studying the unit. Everything is removable by screws.
