Putting back my stock spring/strut assembly today, found the mounting holes for the shock and the spindle are WAY far apart, tried compressing the spring with my jack but that failed as it kept slipping out.

Anybody have a solution to this?

You could keep the sping compressed while putting the strut in place than once you have bolts in place just slowly decompress it, but I've never had any problems doing it with a jack.

Are you going from coils to stock shocks? And is this for the front? If so, take both sides (driver & passenger) off the car & install the stock shocks like that. The steering components should drop.
