could be a number of things, syncros, your bearings are shit, teeth on your 4th gear or counter gear has no teeth. ect..you really cant say for sure until you look at her.

dont do it on jackstands. it's a heavy job, simplified 100 fold with a hoist. you'll need some long extensions with swivel sockets to get to the bellhousing bolts too.

Did someone put your sr in for you? Anyways, the tranny might have been ragged out w/ it's previous owner....sounds like synchros if it's grinding....but it's unusual for it to be 4th....Did you replace the clutch and bearing when you got it or did it come equip't with it....it's a list of things you need to go threw...enjoy!

I found the tranny VERY easy to get out if you jack the car up, and put a jack under the oil pan with a block of wood in between so you don't dent the pan. Then, take out the motor mounts and let the jack down a little. This way the only engine and tranny will be lower and those top pesky bolts on the bell housing are SO easy to get to now. If you are not good with cars, I don't recommend this because you have to check all your lines up top so when you lower the engine, you don't stretch or rip anything.
