please help quick!!!

okay, a little background. we just swapped out a sohc KA out of an 89 and put in the dohc from a 91. we can't get it to start. we're definately getting spark but it won't turn over. the timing is on but we can't figure out whats going on. when we pull the plugs they smell like gas so we know we're getting fuel as well. we need help fast and i know this is a pretty general question but we don't know what to do. if anyone has just some common things that we could check it would help out a lot! thanks.

help maybe?

im not saying its your headgasket, but its a similar problem to my car...i knew my head gasket was blown. and it was getting spark, but since the head gasket was blown(and i mean fried). it wasnt building any compression in the cylinders, it was just skipping across; therefore, not starting. im not an expert by far, but that was just my situation...maybe it helped maybe not.
