Moving to Long Beach...

SO, Ive lived in FL my whole life.

A few things ive had planned didnt work out, but a new opportunity has arisen and is giving me the chance to move out to Long Beach with a close friend of mine.

Anyways, I have never even been to California, but anyone i have talked to about it seems to never want to leave.

The area id be going to is called Belmont Heights i believe?

I will be moving there without a car probably, so my main questions are as follows;

How is the public transportation? I head bicycles work wonders..lol
Is a car 100% necessary?
Anyone attend LBCC before? I was going to enroll there till i get on my feet and such.


I guess just any and all info you wanna give me please feel free to let me know

With a metro tap card and bike you will be able to go all over Los angeles/lbc.

Depending where you are in Long beach, I would suggest you watch how you dress, especially at night.

LB is ghetto as fuck, from what i noticed, some roads suck d, but theres roscoes there so thats a good place for you to eat lol, i heard of theft in 240's there cop harassment there if you have modded car.

LB isn't so bad as you said there are it's shady areas and good areas , the area you are living in is very nice but space wise it sucks any beach front area there is prime location so parking is like playing musical chairs. LBCC has 2 campuses PCC by the coast /LAC in the hood,Downtown LB is area is pretty compact transportation in the city isn't too bad but at all, but going out of it does unless you don't mind riding the metro train. Good luck on your move to Cali. It's gonna be a HOT SUMMER, well not FL nasty humid stuff so you might actually enjoy it.

LB is a decent mixture of nice and not so nice areas.
The beach is nearby and even in the hot summer it isn't too bad since the
ocean breeze helps to keep things cool.

It's a nice area to experience the warm and laid back lifestyle Socal is known for.
Snoop, Sublime, The Offspring, War... not a surprise a lot of chill bands come from the area.

Now transportation... riding the metro and bike sounds good and all but it will get tired very soon.
There are a lot of things to do/see in Socal and for the majority you'll need a car.

From what I gather I'm going to just keep my car.
Firearm laws seem about the same as Florida from what I've read. So that's decent at least.

i stayed in LB for a week on job interviews i loved it, yea it has its bad areas but over all i didnt have a problem, PARKING SUCKED! I GOT 3 TICKETS because i couldnt find parking when i came back to the condo i rented after 9.

i stayed by water front/ west gateway area, over all it was nice experience , traffic wasnt to bad compared to nyc .

im sure you'll like it.. id move to LB/CA if i could..

I currently live in long beach and right down the street from LBCC. The city overall is a great city. If i can i will never move away, always sunny great women, great cars. What more can you ask for. As far as public transportation I have taken the bus quite a few times its not terrible but there are sometimes creepy people on the bus. I used to bike everywhere i went but i would still suggest a car. The city is pretty big and there are many great cities very close. I have a group of friends we all have 240s and they have there own shop. So if u need hooks ups down here or just wanna meet new people with 240s we are always glad to add a new member to the group.

long beach is good. there are ghetto spots everywhere and they are spread apart. just like anywhere else; always be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.

bike riding is nice but you may get weary. the greater losangeles is nothing but driving. i dont wanna say you cant do it by bike, but it is such a vast place you may be better off with a car.

long beach police...i'm not sure what to say about them. i mean my car got broken into INFRONT of the police station and they gave me a hassle for attempting to steal my own car. so....that my bad experience with them...

long beach has plenty to see and theres things to do by the beach/port. They have a nice pier, an aquarium, boating activities, all the fun.

as per living there...cant say much. i live near not in. i occasionally go for visits.

Yeah ive come to the conclusion ill be keeping my car.
Ive just known certain family members that dont even use a car, then again Im sure North California is different. Like San Fran and such.

Ive talked to a few other people and they seem to like LBCC fairly well.
Again, its really probably just for a semester till i can get everything ready to go to the school i really want.

Good luck. If I had to move to California I would probably not even own a 240sx unless I was guarenteed a garage. Way too many thefts, no way I would be comfortable.

Honestly, it's the people who you are with will determine what will happen. If you're around people who like to fight, expect it. The way I see it and moving down from northern california, socal seems to have the nicer weather, as what manonegra said, ocean breeze.

If you smoke, get a MMC (or have a good hook-up) and enjoy the herbs we have here, they're awesome! Also, expect to inherit the socal handshake when you meet people, I caught on and my friends in norcal noticed it when I went to visit back home.

As for laws about our cars, it really depends in the area you live in. I for one live in San Diego (Mira Mesa/PQ region) and cops are chill and don't bother me even though I am low and scraping every where. Even if they do harass me, it's usually because I am too low so I just remove my aero, run a stock bumper, and get it signed off. In conclusion, it all depends if the cops are on a bad day and they will pull over anything to hand out a ticket.

Did the metro thing for 3 months, takes hours to get anywhere just be prepared for that. Also while on the bus I've seen the following:

Mental ill person knock out a 20 year old girl then run off the bus while everything chased him off the bus and beat the shit out of him...

Man with pink hair and skirt - balding... (gotta love hollywood)

And last a homeless guy got on the smelled like the worse thing i had ever endured.... that was the day i said fuck it and bought a car.

But just like evryone has said already Long Beach has its bad areas but also has its nice areas. Ive got family that live near long beach towne center and their neighborhood is real nice.

P.S. keep your car, you'll want to travel to other cities. Huntington, Fullerton, LA... etc

Someone a few comments up said the Pacific Coast campus is nice, and the Liberal Arts campus isnt.
Ive been reading online and a lot is telling me the exact opposite

LAC is the nicer campus, i would just stay away from PCC lol and as for where your going to be living its really nice but parking is just going to be a nightmare
