s13 fluctuating rpms

This is my first time posting here so i wanna get straight to the point.

I got my 240sx not too long ago as a gift but it came with engine problems.

I really don't know a lot about engines myself so i dont wanna go to some mechanic and get the run around and up spending more than i should. I posted here to see if you guys can give me any possible solutions to this problem.

My car is an automatic and when im in Drive and Reverse the problems occur. When it gets to low rpm(about 800) the engine really begins to fluctuate until it eventually dies out unless i give it some gas.

Because of this I wasn't able to pass smog the computer just aborted at the 25mph test because of the fluctuating rpms.

Any of you guys know what the problem could be? Thanks in advance.

Tune up I would guess. I found out it was my spark plug wires arching against the engine. At night, start your car and open the hood. If it was like mine, there was a light show going on. I replaced them and the problem went away. Good luck.
