questions on engine management

Whats up guys? I am new here but been around nissan for a long time. I have been out the game for about 11 years and i am about to build a s13. Back in 99 when i did my first sr swap into my b13 we had jim wolfe and a afc for tuning. Now there are is so much out there. I am looking for a nice ECU or something like a AEM ems for the car. But i want it to have tuning capabilities. I also do not want to break the bank as this is a project for me and my son. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

AFC is a piggy back.

You want a stand alone. There are a good amount of stand alones to choose from, its up to you to decide which meet your needs.

Entry level would be a megasquirt type ECU, though I dont think a plug and play setup exists for our cars but I may be wrong.

If you just want something that works, PowerFC is classic.

If you want something more elaborate, go with AEM, Link, Haltech, Motec, etc.

i've been looking into this recently.

the apexi power fc is very appealing. it is plug and play, and you won't have a problem finding someone to tune it either. plus there are some cool add on bits as well. thats my 2 cents.

I am just wondering if i need a stand alone at all. I only want to get around 3 to 350hp range nothing more. I am looking more or less a weekend fun car. I am pretty sure i do though. Only problem is a i have to travel a good ways for a tuner. I like the power FC but it seems like a biotch to tune. I would prefer something on a computer. What would be the way to go with that route?

honestly if you're only shooting for 300 range, i'd just order a reflashed ecu from someone like enthalpy. you tell them exactly what your setup will be (what engine, turbo, cams, injectors, etc) and they mail you an ecu already programmed.

Thats awesome man thank you. I figured there were others out there beside JWT. That what i had to do a long time ago when i boosted my ga16de. Also you mentioned cams. Which set of cams would you go with.

Yeah my main goal is to just have a very clean 240 for cruising and occasional side ways stuff. So want to have it reliable as well.

I'm running Tomei poncams. 256/256. Drop in and don't require uprated valve springs.

A reflash at that price point.

Always been a fan of Haltech personally, which is what I currently run. I had the AEM EMS as well, it was great for the SR, big community for assistance and tuning.

how do you like the haltech compared to aem ems? are you running the haltech on the same engine you previously ran the aem on?

PowerFC and AEM EMS are what I would go with. Spend the money and protect your investment. I don't know too much about the other ones like Enthalpy, Megasquirt, and Nistune, but you'll want to get something you know your tuner can tune or something you are comfortable with if you are trying to not blow your motor.

Thanks guys like i said i havent been in the scene since around 2004 so its been a minute and it has passed me by. Hopefully i can pick it right back up with the places to go to. I will call my tuner and see what he has experience with and find out what he is comfortable with.
