Passing emissions

I live in georgia and my county you need to get an emission. Luckily last year i went to register all the cars at once and they registered my s14 no problem. This year i wasn't lucky and i needed to get my emission. Problem is i can't pass cause i have no cat. Yet i heard even with a cat i still wont pass considering i have a s14 blacktop sr in a 96 s14. Is that true and im completely screwed or what can i do???

Sounds like the same type of emission testing here in NY. With a 96 with a sr in it its impossible to pass because your car is OBDII... If it was a 95, it would be no problem because its OBDI and the inspection would be "visible".

Like Agent was saying, you would have to find someone that would be willing to give you a sticker, theres places around but I believe DMV across the country is getting more strict with registering a vehicle so you have to watch out. I know in NY you have 10 days to get an inspection after registering any vehicle.

if it is anything like NC, 96+ is OBD 2 testing ( no sniffer), so as soon as they plug the computer to your car you will get rejected for not readiness.

I personally would see what it would take to exempt for emission in your county

OBD2 you're fucked....."live" in a different county that doesn't do emissions and you're set haha. Don't even bother with a cat since ob2 they hook up a lot of stuff. Sniffer test you could probably pass

I know that obd2 in northern Cali is a dyno with a sniffer as opposed to just a sniffer at idle, it really all depends on how strict they are in your county in Cali an sr will never pass a visual but I've heard of people in places with no visual only sniffer passing an sr with a cat and a de-tune, in other words stock with a cat, hell for shits and giggles I threw my old coupe on the tester we had at work and it passed just fine with a cat running stock... Your first step should be finding out what emissions tests in your county consist of, visual or no, dyno or no... But I agree with that one post up above just put a cat on and see if you pass, you never know, the emissions tech may not see that it doesnt visually check out or he or she may not even care, you won't know until you try.

I really think you'll be fine man cus after all isn't Georgia lax about emissions and car registering and what not? Ive seen people register S15s and skylines out there. That kinda shit would never fly out here... Put it this way be glad you live in GA and not CA

Its not a fuse. You got a JDM engine swap, the consult plug is more than likely not wired in. Even if the consult plug is wired in, I dont see it doing anything for you since the SR ECU isnt OBD compliant.

OBD-I cars are more or less allowed to do whatever they want.

OBD-II (96+) cars that have JDM Swaps with a JDM ECU does not have OBD equipment or programming. If it isn't a sniffer test, and only an OBD Test, you will fail every time. I know, because I lived that dream. Congrats on your new track car. My advice is to either pick up a 95 if you still want an S14 and swap everything, or swap back to a KA... Although that second option is a lot of work... Guess which one I picked...

Always check your local laws before doing any mod if you're worried about driving it on the street, but the standards for OBD-I are usually much looser than 2.

Example: in NY, OBD-I is a Safety Check (airbags, seatbelts, lights, ect), and a Visual Check of smog equipment, no electronic checks, while OBD-II is a NYS-Computer Check of The Diagnostic Software as it runs checks on the emissions equipment.

Just checked,
All 1995 and older model year vehicles will receive a three-part inspection:
A TSI test or an Accelerated Simulation Mode (ASM2) test - A dual-mode test including a 25/25 test = 25 percent load at 25 MPH and a 50/15 test = 50 percent load at 15 MPH.
A fuel cap inspection to check for adequate seal.
A visual inspection of the catalytic converter to check for tampering or removal.

I can help the op out or anyone with the same problem, but it's not free or cheap and you'll still need some additional components like CC and hoses for the visual. PM me for details.

Pm me, I might be able to help you out. Have a friend in Roswell that had a similar issue with his miata. Other than that you're best bet is register it outside of metro Atlanta. Florida is another good place if you know anyone down there, no emissions on anything pre2009.

I somehow registered mine in Florida to my georgia address, no fucking idea how that happened haha

Well, if it doesn't remove any emissions components, then you can do it is the general rule of thumb... If it removes anything, then you need to replumb them, or do more research. OBD-II is a harsh mistress, at least in my experience, for modding.

If you straight pipe it with no cat you will fail. It's only once a year, you could always reinstall the cat, do emissions, then go back to a straight pipe.

Lets say i went Straight Pipe. (specifically the Isis 4" Straight Pipe exhaust.) , I'd have to keep the stock exhaust and Cat. and throw it on every year to pass? and if i do it that way, wont i have to replace gaskets everytime?

The Isis is a cat back correct? The one on my s13 is at least. To remove the cat you would replace itmwith a test pipe, so all you would really need to keep is the cat. If you only run the cat back and don't get rid of the cat itself you should pass fine. Only have to worry about violating noise ordinances, which I've never had an issue with in ga.
