SR oil filter - relief valve?

It shows in the full service manual for my 96 blacktop that the oil filters have a relief valve...the oil filters that we use here in the US often are for the n/a sr20, which doesn't have the valve...what is the effect of using the US oil filter?? I'm asking because I'm leaking a lot of oil and thinking it's from the oil filter.

The relief valve just acts as a check valve and doesn't allow the oil to fall back into the filter when you turn off your motor. It won't cause you to leak oil by not having one.

You can use Mobil1, K&N, or other high end filters and they all have relief valves.
