I have a SOHC 89 240sx and when i swapped the tach did not work either. i have been told that you need to put a DOHC tach into your cluster but I have tried that twice with no luck.

Ditto.

I have a 90 with an SR and the shit wouldn't work... no luck with the dohc tach either.

I just ended up buying an autometer
tach adapter. Hook it up to a positive coil wire, and walla. Shit is kinda expensive, but if you ever want a working tach, you have to buy something such as that adapter.
