i was doing some snooping under the hood today and removed the MAF and noticed that there wasn't anything in there. most MAFs that i have seen in the past had a wire of some sort hanging inside. mine has nothing at all inside and it doesn't have any type of screen on the front. is this right?

yes if it is the stock KA MAFS. If you look on one of the sides on the inside of the MAFS, you will notice the actual sensor. There is no screen.
