![]() my car has been overheating even if i drive for 5 minutes. I checked the cams, and dipstick for white milk shaky fluids hoping its not a blown head gasket. There wasn't any so it seems ok. I try and bleed the cooling system but water wont come out, so I'm guessing the radiator is clogged or the thermostat isn't opening. I took out the radiator and thermostat and find brown gunk in there, and all over the hoses. I'm wondering what is the cause of this and is there any way to fix it?
-Thanks in advance Thermostat ![]() ![]() Where the thermostat sat ![]() ![]() Where the 2 Radiator hoses go ![]() ![]() Radiator Cap and where it sits ![]() ![]() |

That is called rust. It is the by-product of iron oxidizing...
![]() DUH!!! Your cooling system looks like that because whoever has owned your car, including yourself, has NOT maintained the cooling system WHATSOEVER. It was probably filled with only water, no coolant. It's been run low on water regularly. Basically your cooling system is fucked up and needs COMPLETE maintenance. Thermostat, radiator, cap, flush system, check hoses and replace as necessary, etc... It is COMPLETELY possible that your headgasket is blown as well. With as shitty as it looks I would be concerned. Looks like rust, so instead of distilled water or coolant, someone probably filled it up with water from a hose which is shitty. I would run flush sluid only, just buy a lot of it and fill the radiator with it, run that for a few months, do it again, run for a few months, then go to coolant with half flush fluid.
That has worked for me quite a bit on a 240 I had a long time ago that was near this bad but depends how much money you want to spend.
