Question Having Transmission Problems...

I drive a 93 240sx se with 88k and today i was driving around like normal and everything is fine. I pulled up to a light, stick it in neutral, when i try to get it into first it wont let me. I stuck it in reverse and pumped the clutch until i could put it into first. The car is driveable, but now every shift feels terrible, it feels like im hitting all kinds of metal and is not smooth whatsoever.

I was thinking it could be:

-transmission fluid problems ( i put redline mt90 in over 4 months ago)
-something clutch related (i called a transmission place and they said maybe it has somethign to do with the bearings in my clutch, or that i could need a new one, afterall it is 88k miles old)
-tranny goin bad

If anyone has had any experience or advice, anything is greatly appreciated...

Thanks,
Jonathan

that's pretty wierd to have it happen that suddenly. if it was driving fine all day and then suddenly started to shift crappy, it is probably not within the transmission. it could be something with the shift linkage or possibly a broken bushing/bearing somewhere on the tranny or clutch assembly. it doesnt seem to be gear or synchro related though, since those type of problems usually dont happen that suddenly and they usually dotn affect every gear.

OR i can just give the normal generic "tranny problem" diagnosis and say "i think it's the synchro's"

check your clutch cylinders (both of them) for leaks and make sure there is plenty of movement at the slave cylinder piston. its a fairly common problem for one or both of the cylinders to go bad on 240s and they are easy to replace if thats it.

When I move the shifter through the gears, it feels as if theres not enough liquid in it (although there is, i checked). It feels very harsh and almost like im scraping it through the gates and like im fighting with the synchros in every gear.

Thanks for all your help thus far,
Jonathan

mine did something like this, not nearly as bad. I thought my clucth was going, (although I dont know what this feels like) and all I needed was a little more fluid in the cylinder, it had leaked out a little somewhere, just top it with brake fluid.

Keep us posted, this is very unique by the sounds of it. I have the same car with 180 000 kms on it and its the original clutch, still bites hard and doesnt slip or anything

do you drive it hard?

sounds like the clutch isnt fully disengaging, make sure the slave cylinder is pushing the fork out all the way when you hit it

i have the same problem. My shifter feels shitty. Like clingity clangy right? hitting loost metal and cant shift gears sometimes right? well...im guessing tis something with in the shifter/ bushing only. Im doubting its the tranny. So i ordered a short shifter to see if that helps...(i was meaning to get a short shifter anyway)

there's probably air in the clutch line. bleed it and see if that solves your problem.

i had that problem, so i replaced my slave cylinder.. then i never bled it properly, so sometimes i couldnt shift AT ALL. Try replacing ur cylinder and bleeding it properly.. $30, 2 hrs time. oh yea.. FYI, to refill ur fluid, its by the driver side, all the way up top, and shot glass sized. Since i had no money to replace my slave cylinder for a while, i just ripped the top off of a windex bottle, sucked out the old fluid(gray), poured new one in(clear). of course u could bleed it.. but that requires two people, and a fook loud of pumping the clutch to regain pressure also, how much play do u have in the clutch pedal? i just tightened mine up so it wasnt so flimsy.. that helped as well. have a friend go under ur car, look for the slave cylinder (passenger side of transmission) and push ur pedal in. make sure that the cylinder is actuating it properly, pushing the tab all the way back... try cleaning it with throttle body cleaner, and washing it off. hope this helps.
