RB25 "Aerocharger" Turbo

So, I had a Ford Focus ZX3 about a year ago that I put an Aerocharger turbo kit on. The company is out of Dallas, Texas, and they make full bolt-on turbo kits for just a few limited cars. Focus, Porches, and GTO's I believe. Now I think they've cut it down to just making kits for off-road vehicles.

Anyways, the kit that I have is very high quality, and the turbo alone sold for about 1,500$ at the time, I don't think it's even made anymore. The turbo is completely self-contained, it has it's own oil supply so no water/oil lines from the block, and it has an internal wastegate with variable vanes so it doesn't require a BOV. It has a manual boost controller switch that the 1st position is 7psi, and the 2nd position is 12psi.

I'm currently installing an RB25 in my S13, and I'm thinking about using this turbo set up. Just wanted to see what you guys thought about it. I'll have to make a flange adapter in order for it to bolt to the manifold, and block the oil lines off on the block, but other than that it'll bolt right in place. The factory intake tube even fits perfectly on the inlet. Any thoughts?

Thanks guys!

I'd be apprehensive to use it...I don't know how the Focus guys workedout with them, but I know Miata guys had nothing but issues with them, especially when they tried making more power. Too much turbine speed and simply getting the unit too hot was often to blame.

I ran this one on my focus for about 30,000 miles and never had an issue. I know the miata guys did have issues, like you said, but I believe they made some changes to the focus kit. I ended up throwing a rod out of the focus motor, but hey, that's what you get running 12psi on a stock motor with 240,000 miles. I figured it was worth a shot. Worse come to worse and the aerocharger blows up, I could throw the stock one back on it. I have the intercooler, piping and all.

Do you have any specs on it?
Without water or oil cooling it could get pretty hot with the small turbine housing. High EGT's could also lead to more detonation which RB's (or any engine really) don't like.

Looks cool though

Well, these turbos are designed that way. But if I remember right, you're supposed to rebuild these things often. The cartridges are self sealed with grease packs and are designed to run hot.

If you get high EGTs, it wouldnt be because of the turbo, it would be because of a shitty tune.

I say go for it, anything is better that the craptacular stock turbo. I'd just run something to tune it to make sure its safe.

Would you consider selling the Aerocharger?

You actually caught me at the perfect time Zed, I will sell it. I haven't even run it on this car yet, I decided to go with a top-mount setup. You can shoot me an email if you'd like:
