Irwindale is finally going to have drift days!

I been wondering why irwindale speedway (the house of drift) has not had any open drift days for the public. Adams motorsports park in riverside is the only nearby location to do it legally (K.R.O.P.S). So i called the irwindale event center for the past 2 years to inquire and bug them to get something going. Guess what people its finally frekin happening! I talked to Hugh and he said that june 12th Formula Drift will be sanctioning the event. Different skill levels and classes A,B,C. I think it will be 100 bucks for the day. YESSSSSSSSS. I dont have any more info but in super stoaked and i want to share with the rest of the drift community!:x :

They HAVE had open events, usually they're just really poorly organized. One of the last ones was rather expensive, and WAY overbooked. People ended up getting only 2-3 laps in 8 hours.

Still can't find info on how or where to sign up. Called their office this morning and no answer.
Edit: finally got ahold of someone at the irwindale speedway office, they said registration is first come first serve at the event. They did not know if there will be a drivers cap. Hopefully they don't massively oversell the event like sideways Sunday has done in the past. Sucks to pay $100 just to get 2-3 runs.

This is the closest event for San Diego, and I would be pissed to get another 3-runs due to no limit on drivers and other things. However, I'll wait this out and wait for feedback about this event.

I agree. it sounds awesome but without a driver cap its not worth it. I drove in the first sideways sunday event at storm stadium put on by adams and i got 3-4 laps tops the whole 8 hour day. it sucked.

I've seen some YouTube videos of Sideways Sunday, and it looked like there were fifty plus cars at least. I'm planning on checking this event out at the first event. Like everybody else, I'm not down with the long a$$ wait.

Emailed Kevin at FormulaD this morning, asking if there will be a driver cap. This is the reply:

Being the first event, we are not currently capping the registration. We are running separate run groups with 3 different courses and with 4 hours of run time. We are hoping for to as many runs as possible for the drivers.

I left around 7:30 so I dont know what it looked like after. Surprisingly smaller turn out. The participants today definitely got their moneys worth. I hope next one has a bigger turnout

Agreed. The event was not properly advertised. Not only that but I feel like people were afraid of it being overbooked and it ended up being under booked. It will be interesting to see what effect it will have on the next event.

yep basically the turnout was pretty small. awesome for me cuz i got TONS of laps in. Finish a lap, pull to the back of the line and there would only be 3-4 people ahead of me. Super fun day. Doubt the next one will be so small.

Yess omg i got 17 runs in myself.. taking my time watching others.. drinking beer.. Killed 2 sets.. It was a fantastic track day with lots of seat time! Michael Essa and Forest Wang were there killing em.

I was there to watch thinking liking everyone else that there was going to be every drifter in SoCal but there wasn't, only about 25 cars TOTAL!!!...

i was lucky enough to run into the Irwindale CEO & a Vice CEO of Irwindale to get some I for on the track itself, they had just barely gotten there Facebook, Instagram & Twitter accounts set up and the actual media release for the track had just only been approved 2 weeks before for whatever reasons.

here is a special piece of information I just have to share and was given the ok to share by Irwindale, They WILL NOT be shutting down at the end of the year but will continue to remain open all through 2015 aswell.

You did great towards the end! I have to admit I wasnt impressed in the beginning, but as the night progressed you seemed to be a lot more comfortable. Nice job!
