I need to get to work though

I understand, the worst case scenario involves me buying an entirely new engine. It's just a matter of whether or not it can survive until my S15 turbo arrives.

Thanks for the reply.

Try to re-tap the housing with the proper thread and put some red Locktite on the bitch. It might hold, but I'm not positive.

No, I guess I wasn't really clear in what I meant. What I'm saying is that I recognize if the turbo fails while I'm driving it could send a shit load of metal particles into my oil and ruin a rod bearing or god knows what else. Am I correct on this? I did just complete an oil change with an OEM filter and I have a magnetic drain plug.

My work is about a 30 minute drive each way, most of which is on a 100 km/h road.

Yeah I will definitely be doing this once the turbo is off the car. However I really don't want to pull the car apart at this point because I'm going to have to pull it apart again once the S15 turbo arrives. I guess you could argue its either take the car apart twice or take the bus.

Thanks for the input guys.

worst case scenario, you will have shaft and exhaust side fins damage due to contact with the housing.

best case scenario, exhaust gas leakage around the housing resulting in lack of boost. it is bad, but i wouldnt call it dangerous for the rest of the engine, just for the turbo.

I actually do have a second vehicle. It's just that it requires a provincial inspection because I imported it from a different province, and until that inspection is passed I cannot drive the vehicle (legally :P). It's a dark grey 92 Mercedes 190E 2.6L with a 5 speed manual (ultra rare). Yeah I'm dumb for having basically two work-in-progress vehicles, but the re-sale value will make it well worth it in the long run.

Yeah at this point I'm pretty close to certain there is damage to the exhaust turbine, based on how long its been doing this. The main concern though is getting to work. I've been risking it so far and it hasn't gotten worse. I have been getting killer gas mileage though as I've been keeping the revs as low as possible and have almost completely avoided using boost (unless absolutely necessary for merging, etc).

In other news, I cancelled my order for the S15 turbo and went with a GT2871R 0.64 A/R. I think I'll be much happier

Thanks again everyone.

What you can do, although you may not like how it drives, is remove the turbo core and compressor flange, and only keep the exhaust flange on the car. Block the turbo core side with plate metal, attach the MAF to the piping end. The car now drives safely without a turbo. It will be slow though, but it works, i have seen it

the 2871 is powerful, but depends on what you want it for. i had an 2860rs, now i have an 2871R. Personally, for a street car i would prefer the 2860. high boost on an 2860 is better than mid level boost on an 2871. broader powerband.
