Should I buy this?

I have the opportunity to purchase a 1995 240sx with right under 83k on it. The car is around $2800, and it is in AMAZING cosmetic condition, inside and out...it's really incredible. It's black/black, and is almost perfect (one small ding, frame damage...though fixed, and doens't affect car). The "problem" is, that it is an automatic. How hard would it be for me to swap an SR20DET in there, considering the auto to manual conversion? Is it worth it? I may just get the car and leave it stock...I like how they look, but a faster motor would be nice. Thanks

2800 is a great price for an s14...especially with that kinda mileage. youd be wasting a really good low mileage engine if you were to swap an SR in there, and i think youll find if you look around some more that it wouldnt be too difficult. if i were you, id buy it and just do a 5 speed swap on it. not as expensive, and you wont be wasting a great KA.

You can get the 5 speed in there for ~$1k with new MC,SC,FW,Clutch.
Trannys go for $350 at the junkyard for a good one.

KAT that sucker and see how much the AT can hold.

How long do the KA motors usually last?

I have a 2003 civic..and I'd be getting rid of it if I got the 240, the last thing I want is a used car money pit. $1k for a manual swap sounds fine...does anyone know any good shops in VA that can do it?

Oh also: I had a mechanic look at it, he said it looks good, the head does have a small amount of noise, but he said that these motors are infamous for it, and it should be fine for a while, and it's not even that hard to fix.

You won't be dumping money into it cause it breaks...

What noise?

Something about the gears / motors in the head (that's where he pointed to) made a little bit of noise? It's pretty hard to hear (with the hood open, and your head near it). He's a mechanic/ knows nissan's so he pointed it out. He also said if it does finally mess up, it's not even hard to fix that part of it, just replace the gears in there.

Timing chain? a lot of people have had timing chain issues. Also, just so you know, 240's are not cheap cars to mod IMO. I mean, any car that you start modding is a money pit but 240's can get exspensive quick. Especially when you get an SR or go turbo (unless you can do your own work). Anyway, that's an awesome buy, although I'd stay away from a car with frame damage.....

Where in VA are you located? Does the car have a clean title? Do you know what kind of accident it was involved in?

I think its an okay buy if you know the past history of the car and if it has a clean title. I did a manual swap on my car and man....its not hard....but its a PITA if you don't have all the right tools at once. Its 100 times easier if you just swap the motor and tranny at once. This because you can install hardlines and resevoir with ease...also because the tranny is mounted to the engine. A KA-T (stock motor with turbo added onto it) is nice....but sell the motor to me if you decide to go with a SR swap.

I'm not sure what type of accident, I believe the front drivers side or fender was hit, that is where the welds are. The title IS clean, not salvage. Oh and I'm near richmond.

Did you test drive it? If its a SE (5-lug wheels) I would buy it just for the heck of it....but stiffen up the front end as much as possible with some nice bits.

its gonna be easier to do the 5 speed swap if you swap sr in at same time, cause you wont have to go looking for tranny bolts and all other shit to do w tranny to engine and the tranny itself, only pedal, clutch line, shift boot and some other minor shit. but yah again that is the best deal ive ever seen.
