Need help with getting car painted

So I took my car to a guy 3 hours away to have my car painted in january. Paid $900. It's now may 12 and I've been talking to the painter throughout the process. He tells me two weeks ago it's done and I can come pick it up (tomorrow may 13th). I text him today letting him know I'm coming and he says he is with his son who does motocross and won't be in town. I ask him when he will be, says he doesn't know yet. This is the second time he's put off delivery. Is there anything I can do to get the car if he isn't home? Some sort of law about following through? I have a receipt but no date was established for when it should be done. I believe I said April would be fine.

You should just show up to his shop to see if he's there and to see if your car has even been sanded down yet.

I got quoted 3500 by one shop which is 500 more than I paid for the car. A friend recommended me to this guy (had work done and it looked great) and he said $900 cause it was winter and business was slow. Cars not my baby but I've got a new suspension and wheels ready to go that have been waiting to be on this thing for over a month ��

if you spent 3 hours to drop it off , you should be willing to spend another 3 hours to check if 1- the work has been done, 2 - it's done right, and 3 (as an extreme scenario) your car is still there.


If you don't wanna go up there cause it is 3 hours away, then getting your car back isn't as much as a priority as you make it seem like.

everyone has a camera phone... has he sent you a pic? If you've seen a picture of it done, and you don't need your car tomorrow, then I'd probably be understanding... assuming he gave you a $3500 paint job for $900.... If you haven't gotten any pics or anything, I'd be there tomorrow before lunch.

That being said... If you have a bad feeling, go check it out.

He said he hasn't taken any pics because he knew I had wheels to put on it? That makes sense... Not. Lol but it's more than a kid motocross thing some kinda ama east coast qualifier. He was mentioning he has sponsors telling them where to go and if they can't be there they'll lose them and such. Apologized for letting it run into the season. I'll probably give him till the end of next week. Idk how anyone can just pack up and go on trips for 2/3 weeks without coming home lol

Couldnt you just go get your car back since it is your car? If you really want it that bad you can worry about the 900 dollars later.
... and if you really want a law about following through, this would be contract law. But, did you bring up how you are expecting the car to be done by now? Especially since you do not remember when you told him to have it done by.

Easy find out if anyone on this site lives close to there. Pay them to go out and take some pictures (pay after you have the pictures ). If they get confronted have them tell him they are looking at the car for you.

This is why you don't pay in full up front. You give them the money for material only.

Its fucking 3 hours dude. Get a car and drive your ass over there. How hard is it? Like others have said, it probably hasnt even been sanded down yet.

My car got stuck in "paint purgatory" for 3 months. Kept getting bumped for hail damage cars from insurance companies. Fucking sucks, I would go up there for sure. My got done when I turned up the pressure, well in stages any way. Just don't be a total ass about it.

nice try, gentlemen. my car was stuck for 3 YEARS.

ultimately ended up in me arriving there with a van, loaded the van up with parts of my car: fenders, doors, seats, etc....

with that, i found another body shop willing to tackle the job. agreed on an amount. 3 days later, i towed the car there and the new body shop took over. about 2-3 weeks later, car was done, ready for assembly.

money at the other shop, totally lost. wheels stolen. years later, i recovered the wheels (you can search through the archives on this forum, its entertaining).

anyway, like others have said... if you value your car, you would drive with a 100% battle plan on how you are going to get it OUT.

and by the way, 900 is not even materials. my hunch is that you got taken -OR- a really quick and shitty paint job.
