Suspension Tech: Swaybar's affect on weight trasfer...
I've been reading a "High Performance Suspension Book" to get the basics and more covered on suspension tech, but something is confusing me....
This home-boy is saying if you tighten a sway bar on one end, more weight will be transfered to that end. I suppose he means, example: front, during braking. I figured sway bars wouldn't have an affect on weight transfer except on inside-to-outside transfer during cornering... Help a confused brutha out.... Disclaimer: Note, I am not a brutha, except to John and Maryann. In those cases the above post is 100% correct. To all others, the post is only 97.6% true.

As an example, i was having really hard pull to the right every time i got on the gas. The right rear of my sway bar had major preload on it. Everytime i got on the gas and the weight transfered to the rear and it squatted, my car would almost leave my lane and hit someone. The problem went away when i fixed it. If you understand how sway bars work it makes enough sense.
The tighter one end is, the faster it reacts because it is already lifting up the other side of the car. When that end(front or rear) of the car is loaded by braking or accelerating, the suspension compresses and makes the sway bars load up. The tighter end tries to lift up the loose end and the car will travel in the direction of the tighter end. When they are evenly loaded, then the force will cancel out i think i've got it right. just wait for one of the guru's to correct me

I'm off to class so heres a link
http://www.whiteline.com.au/default....aqswaybars.htm The sway bar is not really lifting the car so much as moving load from one wheel to the other. As one side of the bar compresses, the other side of the bar compresses the opposite spring. How resistant the bar is to twisting, the length of the bar and diameter of the bar dictate how much force the bar transfers between the springs. godammit...gtg... |

...this is why adjustable endlinks are so important when you corner weight your car.

I don't think you want to use the swaybar to adjust corner weights, unless you're doing circle tracks.
In fact, when you corner weight your car, you should disconnect the swaybar completely to keep it from monkeying with the weights. Then set it back after you have completed, with no preload.
