What would it take for Brand New Sr's?

I was just having another brainfart yesterday thinking about this hypothetical.

Back when the fox-body mustang first came out, there wasn't nearly as much aftermarket support for the 302 engine. After a few years it had blown up into what the chevy 350 had been. Also even though FORD doesnt use the 302 engine in production cars anymore, they still sell them. I also believe there are independant companies that cast the blocks for a reasonable price.

Whatever the case..i was just thinking about this hypothetical.

What if? What if someone had the balls to try and start this up for Sr20's? The accesories are abundant, and the aftermarket support is there. We just need the friggin engines.

how difficult would it be to make a copy of the casting for the sr20det engine? I'm sure the machinery would cost a buttload, but someone must own the machines already. Someone just needs to contract them to start building.

A VARiable you are missing is the cheapness of 240 owners! As for SRs, I doubt they'll ever be even close to as popular as the Ford example. Give it a couple years, and the 240 trend will die down after everyone crashes them.

In other thoughts, I wonder how much it would cost. (Or how about swap kits for VQ engines? THAT would be cool!)

Will never happen. The Honda scene is exponentionally bigger than the 240 scene, how many people do you see with Dart blocks? Now reduce that number by like 95% and you have the number of people that would actually buy an aftermarket SR block.

I don't think there will be enough 240s to support a broad aftermarket. (everyone being cheap doesn't help either) Our aftermarket is solely based on the japanese market. Not many things for our cars are from the U.S., got to think about that. If brand new cast blocks start being produced, it will be coming from Japan.

Honda B series engines already have new blocks being produced that are not factory. Brand new heads too. Just like the old skool v8 motors. So much ridiculous amount of aftermarket support for Hondas. But you know what? Honda people will shell out money for their cars. Even though they tend to concentrate it on the engine, they spend a shit load of money.

You have to take into account the amount of Civics/Integras on the road versus 240s. Just think about how many 240s you see everyday. That's a good indicator.

Doesn't Tomei already sell motors like this, with new blocks and aftermarket components... Who has one of those?
AFAIK, just one person does.

yeah..that's the exact oppostire of what i was thinking. those engine are overpriced. I'm talking about the engine block, crankshaft, rods and pistons, and a completely bare head. something like 3-4k for the block, and 1000 for the head

Tomei isn't a new block, you send them your old engine and they rebuild it from the ground up for you.

why get a brand new one anyways?

longblocks dont cost too much and until japan runs out of SRs which is not gonna happen for quite a while its not cost effective.

plus SRs are not street legal and the believe the 302 is but dont quote me on that.

Its TODA's race engine, it was made for the Daishin Silvia for the GT300. Click here then scroll down to see this motor

why new block??
if I was to consider doing something like this. I would get a longblock (or even shortblock if I could find one) and do the internals my way, by the guy that built many motors for me and my friends. Since I could pick the piston/rod etc combo, bore size, the end product would be better than getting a new SR and start putting in different compression piston, different cams and all that good stuff.
OE is great, but if you know how to rebuilt a motor (or know some1 else that can) its going to be better in the end.
Hope that makes sense

yeah i guess you have a point. but sr longblocks are too freaking expensive especially when you risk getting a blown one.(guaranteed good engine is cool for like 500-800, but you're more likely to pay 1000+ with no guarantee) plus they are getting more and more rare . i dont think it's gonna go away..look at corollas. they are like 3-4 grand right now cause they are so rare. They are only going to go UP in price.

Here are some *TOMEI* engines. Horsepower-wise not too impressive for the price, but it's pro built and probably will handle a lot of abuse. also probably tuned as perfectly as possible for best engine reponse yada yada..

As far as the Dart B series blocks go, you can get them with an increased block deck height which will help if you're going big displacement. People using the Dart blocks are going 2.2+ liter displacement, insane on a stock block.

Having a 2.3-2.4 liter SR would be kinda cool I guess.....
