Timing chain help!

I just did a head on my sr20det... I lined the dark marks on the timing chain up with the 2 marks on the cam gears while the engine was at TDC. I tried to crank the engine over by hand and it felt like a piston was hitting into a valve. I droped the timing chain down the hole by accident when the head was off, because I'm a moron ! I didn't think that it jumped any teeth, but I guess it could have. When I remove the front cover, what should I line the chain up with on the sprocket? (I don't have a fsm btw)
Thanks,
Jesse
