Sr20det oil pump install
Hey guys my sr is going back together. I'm waiting for my head to be done at the machine shop. I was wondering if I should install my timing cover with the old oil pump or if it's really necessary to buy a new one. If not I'll go and put it on today if I can. Just curious also need some advice with setting the chain to get ready for the head. Thanks.

Ahhhhhh, isn't the timing cover/oil pump one piece?? As in, I do not think you can install the oil pump without first mounting it into the timing cover, then mounting that to the front of the block.
Now if you have them apart then..........yeah, not sure why you would do that unless you want to clean it. At that point, a BNIB oil pump (with how cheap they are) is a much more appropriate solution. However, a BNIB would necessitate the oil pump and the block being decked together to make sure they are both true/flat. |

Check to see if it spins freely, if it does it should be just fine. If you feel any resistance, open it up and have a look at the gears, if they are damaged or worn, replace the pump.
However, a friend of mine has a car running a pump that was damaged by bearing material. He opened it up and cleaned it out really well and its still making great oil pressure. I wouldn't recommend using a damaged pump, but you can do it if you like to live life on the edge... |

I will echo my first statement; considering how cheap they are (I see them for less than 200), I would see no reason why I would considering the engine is apart. Also,
You can check to make sure it is flat with the surface with a straight edge when bolted up. If you are sure no debris went through the pump and the gears are fine, the standard one could probably be reused. However, not my engine, so it's your call at the end of the day. Whatever makes you feel OK. |

There is a spec in the FSM for the oil pump gears. Essentially, you're measuring with a feeler gauge the free play. If it's out of spec, you need a new one.
