![]() During my commute today i lost both 5th gear and reverse. Its a '95 s14, completely stock. Gears 1-3 are now whining while 4th gear seems fine. I'm desperate for some advice as this is my daily driver. Has anyone had this issue before? Thanks in advance.

5th and reverse are on the same gear iirc. So the fork must have been damaged in the trans, or something with the fork where it touches the "selector" which slides forward and backwards on the gear.
The parts are cheap for this trans. A rebuild kit is $150 or so. $180 with the broken fork. You also need both shaft nuts, new, they should not be re-used. And a press to get it apart and back together. Might also need additional snap rings and thickness selectors for a few places. $250 in parts is more acceptable quote. Tools is $700 with a press from HarborF. On the other hand, if the problem is just the fork. It will not require disassembly of the trans. You can remove the case and swap forks maybe 2 hours it would take. Hmm better say four hours. To be clean you will want to pressure wash the case and take your time to remove all debris first, which can take several hours. |

I would think the cheapest and easiest thing to do would be to just find a used transmission locally and swap it in. Sure, rebuilding it would probably be better since you know it is fresh that way, but it will be more expensive and time consuming. Since it's your daily driver I would try to find a used trans locally and swap that in. Good luck!
