Aftermarket exhaust, use stock gaskets???

hey guys, i just picked up a used catback (5zigen Border III 60mm). my question is, will the gaskets and bolts for a stock exhaust system fit??

also, someone suggested that i just buy a big piece of gasket material, and cut out the shape of the exhaust flange. is that even a good idea? and arent exhaust gakets metal?

btw, its for an s13 dohc, if it makes a difference. thanks.

i bought an apex n1, used stock gaskets from nissan dealer, alot of aftermarket ones are paperish... stock nissan ones are only 5-10 bucks from the dealer, and speaking of which i have an extra set somewhere....

It will fit, but there is one problem. The center hole of your stock exhaust is 2" diameter, for a 3in exh, you would have a .5" wall all around, which would not do anything but create turbulence. Though 60mm is = to 2.36", it wont mater. If you plan on Na all the way, then it should be good enough, but if you are going turbo, you have failed

go to autozone and they can match them up, thats what I did. I got 2.5 gaskets that fit mine, they were OEM on a jeep cherokee or some shit.

Are you saying to run without the gaskets? That's really not a good idea. Unless you like a car that sounds like a lawn mower. You will have exhaust leaks all over the place. Trust me not the way to go....REALLY ghetto.

Just go to a kragen, napa, or autozone and get a stock gasket for like 3 bucks. What i did for mine is i simply cut the gasket to make it 3 inch.

The snail hit it. This is why you can't use the Nissan ones. Just go to a muffler shop, guarantee they have gaskets for you. I would rather get some that aren't modified and pay a little more then spend time trying to cut one bigger to fit and end up screwing it up.

NO i said, if they dont fit, he can run it without gaskets first, then get new ones. I wanted to SAY that since its exhaust, if he doesnt have a gasket for the time being (the stock ones dont fit, or are too worn), his car will still run alright IE., not sputtering no rough idle.

Not to be nit-picky but this post hardly explains what you said in your second post. I'm just going by what you said to begin with. Elaborating on it with your second post is what you should have done in the first place...

And if you WANTED to say it, then why didn't you just say it? Seems to be the best idea to always fully explain yourself since you have no idea WHO'S reading the posts and what their comprehensive level of understanding is. Just a suggestion. Not trying to start a flame war, just stating an observation.

it won't matter if he has stock header and stock cat, it's still around 2.5 all around, so stock gaskets still would work fine even if his exhaust is larger than stock...

All of the metal Nissan gaskets I got from the local stealership were 2-1/2"...but this was a few years back. Did they change to 2"?

Hell I don't know. I replaced my entire exhaust setup and my High flow cat has flare flanges so I don't need gaskets. Once I pulled all that stuff off I've never looked back. sorry I can't help more.

Wait...(light bulb just flickered)....The connection from the header to CAT isn't being touched right? Just the connection from the "FAKE" cat to the cat-back pipe. That would mean a stock gasket WOULD work. duh...I just realized that....Of course a stock gasket would work, since the fake cat opening is not changing, the larger diameter piping starts at the exhaust so everything before it doesn't matter. So yeah, use the stock ones!!!

OMG I can't believe I didn't realize this before....damn all that coffee i drink...got me SO WIRED!!!

wait...(bulb flickered again)....this would only apply to the one the mounts the new exhaust to the stock fake cat. The gasket for the two exhaust pipes mounting together will need to be cut out appropriately or get the right size from a muffler shop. sorry guys...

As far as the material, the Nissan ones are metal based gaskets, they looked like metal and everything but they're flexible like paper, good stuff. Most muffler shops should have this quality gasket in stock to fit what you need.

Just go to a parts store, you can find gaskets in a range of sizes, 2", 2.5", 3", in lead, copper, paper. You don't need to go to the dealer or move it from some other spot. Find out what size you need, 2 or 3 bolt holes, and go to autozone or whatever.

Okay guys not to rain on your parade but, have you actually gone to a parts store lately? They a fuckin joke!! Really, EVERYTIME I go to an Autozone, Kragen, Pep Boys, Shucks, etc... they either have complete morons working there or they don't have the part (or tool)!!

For example, I went in recently to try to pick up a couple of exhaust hangers, you know universal part no biggie, they should have SOMETHING right? ahh no...first the guy behind the counter is totally lost when I said "exhaust hanger" or when I elaborated and said "you know the little rubber thingy that holds the exhaust to the car?" The guy just looked at me with total "STUPID" on his face.It was a Pep Boys BTW...and I've had similar experiences in Autozone mostly.

So now I just go there for oil, car wash soap, shammies(chamois), and maybe the occasional bolt or washer.

I mean unless you guys live in a different California then I do then I'm sure these stores will just waste your time....seriously try a muffler shop. At least you'll talk to someone that knows what an exhaust hanger is...hopefully.
