Ghetto exhaust for now?

I have a magnaflow muffler on stock piping. I didn't want to spend the extra cash for the piping back when I got the muffler. I will eventually get 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 inch piping to go with the muffler.

For now, the stock resonator (canister between cat and muffler) is rattling. I'm guessing a baffle in there is broken. When I smack it with my hand I can hear something loose in there.

Either I spend the $75 on new piping (hooray for hookups) or I can ghetto-rig it for now for about $7 and spend that money on xmas stuff. Money is pretty tight, especially right now, so every little bit helps.

I can use my air tools and cut off the resonator and put in a 2" (stock piping) pipe instead of the resonator and use exhaust clamps to keep it on there. I figure it should work for awhile until I get real piping.

What do you think? Too ghetto? For less than $10... I don't know if I can pass it up...

Well, look at it this way, you can spend the 7 bucks now and then the 75 bucks later, that will be 82 bucks total. But then again, if your moneys tight, thats 7 bucks to fix it for now, and 68 for x mas... its all in your prioritys man. I would have had the whole thing done at once when you got your muffler and needed cash... thats just my tcw though.

Nope, that works just fine.

BTW, when you go bigger with piping, do AT LEAST 2.5"...the KA has a lot of exhaust energy, and people have shown big gains with large (3" or 80mm) exhausts on N/A KAs...nevermind the "backpressure" BS that your Dad told you that you need to have...that doesn't apply to this big 4-cylinder. FYI...

won't 2.5"+ piping on a stock KA be really loud? Right now with stock piping and magnaflow muffler it's pretty damn loud. Not annoyingly loud but it makes enough noise.

Since the current resonator is probably all busted up inside, it probably doesn't muffle any noise anymore. Will adding a straight piece of pipe make it a lot louder? Could I find a cheap muffler and put that in there instead? So it would be cat -> cheap muffler (acting as resonator) -> magnaflow muffler.... all with stock piping (2").

What u think?

The stock resonator on my car had a broken baffle too, and then it got a hole in it. I took it to the muffler shop here in town and he cut it out and welded a piece of piping for $10. It took him like 5-10 min to do and it was a LOT quieter than with the hole in it and the only rattling i have now is the second heat shield, damn that thing.

hehe... well it's done.

I figured... I know the guys at the muffler shop... so during my lunch I had them cut out of the resonator and weld in a straight piece of pipe.

It's a bit louder, but sounds nice. Works for me.

some of us have other priorities than to blow $100 on custom catback piping. My job doesn't exactly allow me to spend that much money on these kinds of things. One day, it will get done the correct way. But for now, it works...
