what is gook?
I was reading the archived thread about flushing your engine using tranny fluid, 0w30 oil, and gook. I went to pep boys, checkers and autozone, and I cant seem to find this so called gook. When I asked for help finding it some old lady behind the counter said "that would be so wrong" I guess she was reffering to the name?

It comes in a plastic bottle or metal can. http://www.gunk.com/a_lineart2.asp?img=MF3.JPG http://www.gunk.com/a_lineart2.asp?img=MF2.JPG Gunk Motor Flush is a solvent which flushes out all the grime & sludge which builds up in your engine. Because it's a solvent, it acts like a detergent to clean out your oil passages and helps to free sticking valves and crud around your piston rings. It's great to use before an oil change because it helps to clean out your engine of all the crap thats in it. About the only problem is though, Gunk Motor Flush does such a good job that it might get rid of that exact same grime & sludge built up around your oil seals and may cause your engine to start developing leaks around those seals. Also, all that gunk & sludge that the Gunk Motor Flush loosened, could clog up the screen to your oil pump causing your engine to seize from lack of oil lubrication. If you plan on using Gunk Motor Flush on your high mileage motor for the first time, it's best to drop the oil pan & clean out all the grime & sludge that the Gunk Motor Flush loosened & deposited in the oil pan. I've used this stuff for years on various cars I've owned thruout those years, haven't had any oil related problems on any of those motors in the time that I've owned them. Anyhow, hope this helps... However considering the high revolutions your motor runs at on a daily basis and normal wear & tear on your engine, Gunk Motor Flush burning out your valve seals & crank seals should be the least of your concerns. Gunk Motor Flush is not meant to be left in your engine as part of your oil change...It's meant only for use as a motor flush. It should only be used for about 5 minutes with the engine idling at normal RPM. It's purpose is mostly to wash out all the gunk & sludge that can build up in your oil passages from oil breakdown due to high temperatures. That gunk & sludge can buildup and restrict your oil flow to your oil pump. Insufficient oil flow can cause your motor to spin a bearing on the crankshaft resulting in you having to replace your motor. Using Gunk temporarily as a engine oil/motor flush will not affect the valve seals & crank seals as drastically as one may think. Clogged oil passages will!! I've got over 135k miles on my motor, and have used Gunk Motor Flush over 38 times with each oil change, (I'm lazy...I average an oil change about every 3500 miles), & have not had any problems using it. To be fair, you can't judge a product on a one-time-use experience. You have to use it several times before you can come to an objective conclusion. If the product were THAT bad, consumer demand, (or lack thereof), would have had the product removed from the market YEARS ago!! Considering my car/motor has over 155K miles, (I got the car used at 20K miles), I'm more concerned with the crank seals & valve seals failing from daily use/wear & tear than failing from using Gunk Motor Flush. Considering how I abuse my motor on my daily drives, I'm surprised my motor is still running strong. My oil pump or piston rings will probably fail way before my valve seals or crank seals do!!! But that's my opinion...... ID
