Help identification for tranny swap (Pics)
(images may or may not load, the host is a shithole)
I am in the process of swapping my '89 Automatic tranny to a '91 5Spd. When I removed the auto tranny, I was left with these wires / sensors: ![]() ![]() ![]() The last two, "C" and "D" came out the following holes. The wires for "C" were cut, because there was no way to disconnect or detach them. ![]() ![]() I have asked some people, and most have said that the DOHC tranny has 1 more sensor (4th gear). From looking at the automatic transmission(above) and comparing them to the 5 speed(below) I am a bit confused. I have alot more wires on the 5 speed. Can someone please help me identify what each of these are. #1 ![]() #2 ![]() #3 ![]() #4 ![]() #5 ![]() And a shot of the whole thing: ![]() If you can help shed some light on this situation it would be greatly appreciated. I need to know what the automatic sensors are, and what the manual ones are. What ones I dont need to use, and what ones I do. And what is that orange tube? |

you need an fsm! #1 is speed sensor #2 is neutral switch. the others are fifth position, reverse, and ?. the red tube should be tied up somehwere. its for venting. you dont really need the auto stuff.

I do not completely understand though. I was told that I was able to use my existing transmission wire harness. If I use the old harness, I will have to cut off the old sensors, and splice the new ones, correct? Is there any info on what wires go to what.
Or will I have to get the whole tranny harness from a manual? If yes, then is there a point i can disconnect the harness, or should it be cut & spliced. |

So I went to the junk yard today in attempt to get the M/T harness.
On the automatic tranny, all the wires ran up to the fuse box, and there were 4 connectors at the box wich were solely for the sensor wires. Easy! On the manual tranny, most the sensors went to connectors on the underside of the fuse/relay box. After disconnecting these plugs, i found out that wires feeding these plugs are not only tranny wires, but also come from power steering, and also splice into the main harness. I isolated them as much as i could, and got what looked right from "everything else" but I now have more wires than i know what to do with. This is a sohc engine/tranny. Anyone who has ever done this please share some of the wiring info. thanks. |

DOHC lower harnesses are a direct swap but you won't have the 4th gear, 5th gear, or neutral switch wiring, and you don't need it. Just wire the VSS in to the existing plug, tie in for the reverse lights, and finish it up.

I guess that clears some of the confusion.
so i can say fuck off to the top(4th) od(5th) and neutral position. I dont imagine the reverse lights are gonna be too critical to get it running. So all i really need to connect is the speed sensor to get it working? Does that mean i can unplug everything from the AT (pics "A,B,C,D") from the fuse box, and just forget about them? |
