Stud snapped off with lug nut!!!

Ya while i was driving my car for the past few days i noticed this noise that i couldnt figure out. today it got louder and when i was on the free way my car started to shake the faster i went. I then soon found out (thanks to a friend) that one lug nut snapped off with the stud still stuck inside! And all the lugs were loose. Anyone know a solution to why this happened? Also how can you repair a broken stud? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

take wheel off, unbolt the caliper, remove the rotor. Now take a philip screw driver and hammer out the broken stud. Pop in the new one, and screw on the lug nut till the stud is stuck on the hub. Remove the lug nut, pop the rotor in, bolt the caliper in, put wheel back on. You're done!

Or, leave the caliper and rotor on and do the same thing. I've never removed the brakes to change out a stud.

well you don't have to remove the rotors if you have small fingers.
Once you see it, you will figure if you have to remove it or not.

I agree with Russ, I have replaced them without removing brakes before...
Hell, only took the wheel/tire off for convenience

I don't have dust shields on my own car, but I've done it on a GF's car before with dust shields still in place. The shield is flexible enough to slip your hand through and get the stud seated. True, you'd do a better job by actually pulling the hub and pressing it in, but a good torque down will pull it through enough to seat.
Like Phillip said on my own car I don't even take the wheel off. Pop it out from the front, reach around and press it in, tighten.

Thank you, Russ, for spelling my name right for the first time in damn near 3 years now... I agree, I ONLY took the wheel off for the convenience of getting the stud in faster, and PISS on taking the dust shield off to do it, sounds like extra useless work

You can't tell these new kids anything, they think there's only one way.

Actually, no...
I am a fat bastard at 5'7" and 238 pounds (this morning, woo hoo!!!) and my hands can palm an NBA regulation basketball, I wouldn't call them "small" in either sense of the word... "Approach" is the word you seek here, you can get it in there, I promise
