Question Should I turbo my SR20DE???

I have got a few questions about my non-turbo SR20. I bought an S13 with a non-trubo SR20DE, and I'm thinking about putting a turbo on it...here are my questions..

I know a good bit about the DET, but not so much on the DE. I know it has 9.5:1 compression, it has no rod oil squirters, smaller oil pump, 160hp, different cams...

Now, I'm thinking about buying a turbo kit and putting it on this engine. Would it be worth it? Or would I be better off spending 2k$ on a redtop?

I was thinking about the Apexi AX turbo kit, around $1500, buy a turbo manilfold wastegate, IC, BOV, ect. Also would I have to buy a fuel management, or get a turbo ECU?

Any help would be appreciated!

I would almost keep the n/a sr and just see how high you could get it going without turbo. You could build it to be very reliable and fun. Not as much power as a turbo motor but also less complications.

Thought about that too, but it seems as if it would be just as, if not more expensive to build the NA. Turbo is somewhat cheaper, and would make more power.

its doable but you will

need a go with a thicker head gasket and get an oil cooler are the main thing

next you have too get the Injectors, turbo +lines and have the ECU reworked

and do a lot of mods here and there on the motor but som would disagee that it can or cant be done but you have too find some one who is compenetent to do the work.

best bet is too buy a complete red top that is trashed and swap of some of the parts for your Sr20DE motor.

You just owned yourself

I owned myself?? How??

Where did I call my car gay? I said NA is gay..not my car.

Use your head "kid", Thanks for the pointless comment...

Anyway, to people that have given me some opinions thanks.
I can get a DET block fairly cheap, just need an oil pan..

So, if I bought a turbo block, stronger head gasket and the other little msc things, it would work..?

You say N/A is gay,and your car is N/A....therefore,by turning on our brain, and using logic...

You owned yourself by saying something you bought is gay. If N/A is gay,why did you buy it? Genuis. If you wanted turbo THAT bad,why didn't you save some money by getting a chassis with no motor,or KA and swapping it to a DET? That would have been using your head, instead of buying a car and saying 'oh shit,I want turbo wonder how do to it on this engine...'

Hahaha, oh your wonderful logic...

I'm sorry if thats how you took it, but thats not how I said it. I said NA is gay..

Why did I buy it if it was NA? Because it was less than $2000..lol thats why. I didnt want a turbo THAT bad. Save money and buy a chassis with no motor and swapping in a DET, yea that would be using my head. Lets look at it this way..

240sx coupe less than 140k miles - $1000 with no motor. That would be very hard to find, and impossible to find one that is in the shape mine is in.
Silvia front end conversion - $1000, on the cheaper side WITHOUT labor to put it on and have it painted.
SR20DE swap, with working A/C and power steering - $1500 That is very cheap, considering I work at a performance shop and I know that would be a very good deal.

So, lets put our brains to work...$1000 + $1000 + 1500 = $3500. I got the car for almost $2000 cheaper.

You do the math.

It wouldnt be as hard as everyone says to turbo your engine. FWD guys do it ALL THE TIME. Its probably more common than swapping in the DET engines. check out sr20deforum.com for more info regarding the swap. if its an S13 SR20DE, its nearly identical to the FWD version for the B13's.

"Silvia front end conversion - $1000, on the cheaper side"

You work at a shop and you can't get it cheaper than that? You should get a discount for working at a shop,JGY sells front ends for $850.

As far as the car goes, you got a steal on your car, good for you. A swapped 240 around here would not go so cheap,so my bad. Howsumever I can get decent/good shape coupes for $500 or so, no motor/trans...

Either way, best of luck with whatever you do.

Sell that engine to some dumbass ricebandwagon jumper..." You can be the only guy on the block with an SR non turbo!!!"

We deal with Honda and Acura only, none of our distributors deal with Nissan, and mention a front end and you'll get laughed at. I did get a good deal, otherwise I wouldnt have thought twice about doing the DET swap.

I'm waiting for my boss to finish his RB swap..I will make my choice after I drive that thing.

Peace

Wow. I lost a little respect for ya in that post. No need to bash a guy just because hes not JDM tyte. Ever think someone might want to build up a N/A SR20DE?

And BTW, where can you get coupes with no motor for 500 bucks all day? Get me a 5 speed coupe and I'll give you a finders fee.

There is a 240 for $500 on this board for sale right now...

I like the SR20DE,if you notice in my earlier post I ask him not to ruin a rare/nice engine like that...

Your right about bashing people too.....damn,I'm just completely fucked up on this thread didn't I?

EDIT:I just saw you have an N/A rwd sr. Any dyno charts/vids/etc ? How does it feel compared to the N/A KADE? I've got a buncha freinds w/FWD SRs....is it a "high port" or "low port" engine?

yea, i say go for it. This is acutally what i am thinkign of doing is buying an n/a sr and turbo-ing it. I had a FWD sr20 in my nx2k and there is def nothing wrong with an n/a sr. THey are still pretty much internally the same besides the 1 point bump in compression. Tons of fwd guys turbo their n/a srs. I say def go for it
