The thread about the current state of the forums was lost, but we all know what it said so I won't stir up more trouble in this post by dwelling on that...

We all agree that something must be done, s13grl has gone to nazi mode and I encourage other mods to follow a similar approach. But the moderators can't bear the sole responsibility of the keeping zilvia.net forums a good and enjoyable place to learn.

Having said that, I'd ask that all of us who have been here a while set an example (that HOPEFULLY every member on the forum will follow) by asking yourself if your comment/question/remark/ect... benefits the forum before you add a reply or post a new topic. Also, if it's a question, have you tried to find the answer on your own or do you want us to just do the work for you?

One line replys like "Swell" "cool" "neato" "mad tyte bitchin yo" do nothing for the forum. It's not helping anybody or doing anything but raising your post count, and therefore over inflating a newbies trust in you.

Also, many of us get into heated debate and sometimes all out internet brawls over something simple or pointless...drifting for example, but there are many others which are far more pointless.

I urge you to look at the forum you are posting in before you post. The most frequently abused forum I would say is "Chat" the chat section is for "General Discussion About The Nissan 240SX" now of course since we don't have another place to post, things about general car stuff and Nissan stuff could be posted here. But too often we ignore the subtitle and just see "CHAT" and so we do just that...

Also, if you have a question or comment that only applies to one member of the forum (IE: in the middle of a discussion about bore and stroke you ask someone a question about the rims on the car in their sig) please use the personal messenger, e-mail, or some other form of direct communication with that person, rather disrupting the topic with your personal inquires.

I'm not trying to lay blame on anybody and honestly I'm guilty of doing every single thing above that I'm asking you not to do. I am going to try my best to "practice what I preach" so to speak in order to keep this forum a place we can all learn from and enjoy.

So please, older members, set a good example for the newer folk.

Thanks,
DSC

well, i have this idea, just want you guy's comment on it. create another zilvia forum for the "older" zilvia members, limited down to like 200? 500? members, or say members before january of 2002, than it'll be the old zilvia chatroom again, yet we can frequently visit the "newer" "zilvians", but again, that'll split up the room, which is bad, but on the brighter side, it'll be a room of the oldies and everyone knows each other well

I completely agree. Now I know that DSC is commenting more about the content people post in these forums, but I think an equal problem exists with some of the member's attitudes.

When I first came to these forums six months ago I was really skeptical of them because of the abundance of poor comments and poor attitudes. Since then I have learned to tolerate some of the people/BS on these boards and have been able to get the information I need, but I must admit, at first I didn't feel welcome and I didn't enjoy posting on these boards.

Anyway, that's my two cents...

i dont know about a seperate board for the seniors...

it's just something we have to deal with, eventually everyone will get better.

i dotn really have a problem with the forums right now, just delete some of the stupid threads that we see everyday, i dotn even bother with them anymore...

but i also dont think we should start an off topic section either, NWN has one and i never check it, thats not really a good thing.

the off topic stuff is key, it gives a greater insight into the personalities of our community, if all we did was talk about 240's all day long i'd a been gone long ago.

i personally want to have a thread or 2 about a bmw, or a new infiniti everynow and again and i wanna hear other peoples stories because i want htem to hear mine.

this is a place where 240 enthusiasts can congregate and discuss whatever...

i dotn have a single friend who has any interest in 240's cept for the guys i met through this board, and when we get together, it;s about more than just 240's all day long...

delete the offensive stuff, just ride the rest... and make some clothign and hats to sell to members, i'd one of each, that'll pay for any upgrades for the forum... i been contimplating on whether to go ahead and have a few things made for myself recently, but i'd be willing to give a few buck to west to keep this thing going strong

seriously, I totally agree with DSC. I mean there are just some BS that could just really stay off the forums. We were a bit harsh and everyone complained that the moderators were too strict, and now that we lay off a bit, all this BS show up again. Try to keep the forums clean, and free of useless BS posts (even I am guilty of this). So yes, It would really help if everyone helped with this.

Well, i'm a newbie here, but i'll dare to suggest some stuff too. I'd like to add to the merchandise stuff.... make some damn stickers/decals. I'd rather have Zilvia.net in nice big letters all over my rear windshield than a nissan logo. Plus i think it'll attract some more people here, and since they aren't going to be coming here because of questions (but because of curiosity) there will be more people that are knowledgable (like i see a 240s in traffic quite often, yet there isn't a single person here from MD but me)...

As for additional room, i think that all the racing questions/stories should be moved to a separate area, so that they won't flood up the space, yet you would be able to check them sometimes if u care.

I agree with you DSC. I really like Zilvia Chat because it isn't AS technical and on topic as Fresh Alloy, and it feels more like a group of friends talking back and forth. Lately, though, there have been a rash of B.S posts not worthy of any forum and seriously, this rapper talk stuff some people do (Ex: "yo, g Ima get me some altezzas fo me two four zero, yo") needs to stop. I'll quit my occasional bickering for the better of the forum..

240meowth: I like your idea, but you would be excluding me since I registered in January (although I see how this could've been on purpose)! Maybe we could make that forum, but you could still let me in? Think about it and let me know

well, more often than not I have strived to help out here regardless of how it has been taken. I usually try to answer questions and correct peoples misconceptions or misinformation .
I have had heated debates on other forums with the moderators over facts. I have not had that experience here , except of course when I take the time to rip on Grant, hehehe J/K Grant, you the man. Much respect for the meet last week(just speed up the cruise next time, hehehe).
ah, but I stray. Fact is, I was on another forum that I watched go down the drain before my eyes. I am on several forums still one of which has a lot of information about our cars . It also can be very harsh and there is a lot of attitude. I must say I have seen this forum start to slip in the direction of Nico. At the same time I fear that in our zeal to keep that from happening it goes the other way and turns into another forum where the camaraderie of this forum does not quite exist. It is somewhere in between that we need to wind up . Is it possible well I can't answer that. Only time will tell.
oh yeah Kreator big decals on the back of the car is just ricey in my eyes.
Now a small window sticker like socal240sx.org has is kinda cool.
West ? you reading this? what do you think?

I don't think the forum is going downhill. Some of the issues you are discussing is just the effects of zilvia.net growing larger very fast. We have new members every day it seems. We are all here to help each other, regardless of how simple or complex the question may be.

I think the moderators are doing a very good job keeping the pointless posts under control. They can't catch every one--it would take so much time and they can't lock a thread just because 1 person out of 10 made a pointless reply.

I disagree w/ creating a different forum for the "older" members that have been around longer. It wouldn't be fair to the newer members--they would be missing out on knowledge that may help them. I would rather have 1 large zilvia than two baby-zilvia's. Do you think that a new zilvia member w/ an SR20 swap, or a auto-to-manual swap is not worthy enough to share his/her knowledge w/ us members that have been here for a while?

I guess I'm in the "going downhill" camp. The good news is that we now have more members who know what they are talking about than ever before. We have a few people into different activities (car related) that share that info. We are growing some technical wizards and borrowing some from "other" board(s), too.

I just erased a lot of text here that was a giant rant. I guess my end point is we need to police ourselves. There are boards that have survived the growing pains we are now receiving b/c they were strong. Sometimes rude. Sometimes downright mean. But the bottom line has to be that those who visit recognize there is a line. If they can't help but cross it, this ain't the place for them. smackdown vetrans and nazi moderators apply within

I have to agree with DSC here (as well) ... and 96SEchick too.
I like the idea of cleaning the forums up a little (not too much... I like the friendly atmosphere too) but not splitting it up. Besides, I'd be stuck in the leaky injector division. kidding.

Splitting up the forum in to "young" and "old" or "dumb" and "smart" pretty much defeats the purpose of these boards-- that is, to share information. Being in a room of new 240 owners would really serve no purpose, as there's nothing to learn from anyone. Besides, all you upperforumsmen (upperforumswomen) would have no one to teach and feel rewarded having taught.

I haven't been a victim of any nazi terror yet, so I can't say I think the current form of moderation is too harsh, though judging by some of the recent junk (and yes, I admit I probably fan some of it into flame as well) it seems like moderation may even be too slack.
But again, I really can't say.

I agree with all that gangster/rapper/whatever (no disrespect to the music...) talking stuff. I honestly can not stand it and feel it needs to go. Just like I can't stand most 16 year olds. ......

Oh right, chances are that I'd fit into the (relatively?) "young" group members here too-- but as much as I enjoy my exuberant youth, I don't necessarily appreciate being grouped with "the rest of us". . . .

I'll keep it short. I love this place, but I love America too. Neither are perfect and both need the average member of it's community to put in a little more each day. DSC made the best point.....just think twice before you post! Is it a neccesary comment and/or will it help those on this board. Also, DO YOUR OWN homework. If the search isn't working or you can't find it then ask your . Last I am guilty of all f this as well and will curb my actions in the future.

I'm so new here I don't really know the 'personality' of this board yet, but from what I can gather it seems like drifting is a controversial topic - some are interested, some don't want to see topics on it. And posts go off the first page fairly quickly as well. Perhaps, as this board is growing (some of you have said), a couple new forums need to be added to keep discussions organized to their relevant headings. For example, you could set up a Racing/AutoX/Motorsports/Drifting type of forum, and an "Other Cars" forum for comparisons and discussion of non-240 car topics.

Just a couple ideas. Also, since it seems the search function doesn't work, perhaps a FAQ forum should be created that mods can move threads into if they contain good information that should be archived.

Since I'm too damn lazy to read all the above, excuse me if this has already been suggested....

The best way to take care of more members is to make more forums.

"Chat" is too general, most people think of it as just an OT board; so, why not just make a Lounge or something for O/T posts?

Also a seperate forum for Racing (stories/drifting/etc) will clean out a lot of the posts from Chat as well...

All good stuff. Ideally, we should police ourselves. However, I intend to be slightly more strict as the boards grow and people fail to police themselves.
Excellent proposal BryanH. I think we are starting to get enough members and enough diversity in the areas of interest in the 240SX that different forums can be justified. This would allow members to more easily sort through what they want and don't want to read, leading to a more satisfying experience for everyone. We have a FAQ, but to my knowledge, us mods don't have the authority to add to it...just Mark. And hopefully, Search will eventually be back on its feet.

The irony of putting the racers with the drifters is killing me! FWIW, I used to think we needed more forums, then I got to thinking about it. The best boards I know keep a few forums and avoid the OT forum alltogether. There is also a strong moderator presence.

OT boards tend to bring in people with no interest and too much free time. Sure, we could just not click it, but it seems a shame to waste West's bandwidth when CSI, OT.net, and the rest already exist!

I still like "appearance/stereo" as a separate board since those always straddle tech and chat anyway.

I like it better the way it is now... Before it sounded like a teenage chat board or something, with everyone talking about their days, and who likes what... And two people would post in a thread like 10 times each, carrying on a conversation with eachother that was not relevent to the topic.

Quit the bitching.

it would probably help if days worth of posts wouldn't magically dissappear... but oh well, that's life.

Basically, if people wouldn't ask stupid questions, we wouldn't have to bother with stupid answers, and then maybe posts wouldn't go OT so much.... the problem is, everyone was a newbie at one time... and all newbies will ask stupid questions at some point. If we're patient with the newbies (and maybe harsher... and used more bitter sarcasm... hmmmmz) then maybe the stupid questions will slow down and we'll all live in peace.

some of this stuff has to happen sometime in the near future to help it all out. after all this bitching and complaining though i'm sure just this alone will stop some of the problems now that people know what the deal is. or maybe it's just time for new people to come on n take over the site . out with the old and in with the new!

The forum just has to settle back in. Before all the site changes, and issues w/ speed occured we were at a fairly happy medium (as happy as imperfect beings can be). I think all the changes that have been made have stirred things up, and people just aren't sure how things should flow yet. We are, in an essence, enjoying a growth of personality. The board is changing. Bt everything changes.

The key to keep change in check is to be more disciplined. NOT MEAN. disciplined. There is no reason to be spitefull, or hatefull to anyone. Every post ranks a certain amount of merit. I say, if you have nothing to add, then don't say ANYTHING at all. If someone does say something pointless.. delete the post.

And it would be a great idea for WeST to give the Mods rights to the Archive folder. Your a smart guy, and know a lot of stuff, and have been there, done that. But there are a lot of threads that should have gone in the FAQ that haven't.

Good god, that was a lot of stuff to read. I hear lots of complaints here. There are some very valid points though.

I fully admit that I am 100% guilty of most, if not all of the things mentioned, but that's really kind of part of growth. For me, whenever I post on a topic that I don't know about, and I admit it, that's usually when no one else has posted, but it's been looked at like 40 times. It's just to acknowledge, hey, I looked, sorry I couldn't help.

I agree that Moderators should have the ability to put posts in the FAQ, and there should also be a FAQ in that FAQ for new members. But for example:

The post on the CA18DET not too long ago, should be put in the FAQ, IMO, or at least the stats on the SR20DET, KA24DE, and the CA18DET, and maybe the advantages and disadvantages of each, instead of a comparison (kind of what I tried to start a while back, that didn't work too well).

Mostly I think that the FAQ section can be better utilized, this way more posts can be locked, pointing them in that direction.
