I'm sure someone's asked this before, but the search feature isn't working on my computer at the moment.

I have a '95 SE 5-spd w/ an Injen underhood intake.  When I  give it gas to leave from a stop, there is about a second (or more) lag before the engine revs.  If I just blip it for heel-toe downshifting, sometimes it doesn't rev up at all.  It's very annoying and is leading to me killing the engine often.  I was told it might be that those sh***y plastic guides (timing chain or cam?) broke and are causing a timing problem (the exhaust does smell a bit rich).  Any help?  Thanks in advance.

Check your hoses and clean the throttle. You may just have some carbon deposit that's causing the air not to be delivered properly.

check your throttle cable thats more than likely the cause.

the throttle body not being clean would not be the cause but is a good idea to clean it out

also check leaks in the intake where it goes together.  If the maf is judging the amount of air going in incorrectly then it can cause the engine to bog down.

I know how you feel, that's what driving a car with drive-by-wire is like. When I downshift I have to "blip" the throttle by punching it to the bottom (WOT) for a split second for the rev to come up just 1k rpm. it's ridiculous.  oh, that's on a MkIV Volkswagen, fwiw.

All I can think of would be a dirty/clogged air filter or related parts. having the open element should actually increase throttle response.

Best of luck!
