I need help... 5 speed tranny

Uh, I was going to do an auto to 5 speed conversion on my car, and I've got all the parts needed, and was just waiting on the transmission. Unfortunately, I received it, and left it there. Since I purchased it on ebay, I left the guy his feedback already, but then when I was looking at it later on, for some reason I can only put it into 1st and 2nd gear positions. Can anyone tell me if this always happens when the transmission is just laying there outside of the car? Or, is the transmission that I purchased bad, and I only got ripped off? Are there any ways that I would be able to check if it's still good OTHER than trying to install it in the car? I'd be thankful for anyone's help.

Thanks for the help guys, me and my friend will check it out someone, and I'll keep you guys updated about what happened.. and hopefully you guys'll know what's up with it / or what to do. Thanks for those who have posted, I appreciate it.

While I'm at it, do you guys have any pointers while doing this swap? Me and my friend are going to do it on both of our cars, starting with mine. So, the swap will probably begin within the next 2 weeks, (the tranny that's running into problems will probably go to my friend.. so we'll check up on that.. and I ordered a different one, and it's on the way) and I'm just finding out some back round on it.. before it's performed. Are there any pointers.. do's and dont's? Let me know..

Taking out the tranny is kinda a PITA. after taking off most of the tranny bolts, you can use a jack to pick up the engine a little to get the top bolts off. Remember to drain all the tranny fluid before hand. Make sure you have all the tools needed. Keep a breaker bar on hand as well as some sort of extension.

Oh.. what else do I need other than what's going into the car itself.. (parts wise) I know I need the bolts/nuts and what not, but what else do I need? Fluids.. etc? Also, I'm doing it on a '98.. so.. should there be a difference to your car, whichever model it is?
