Is my oil pump shot?! Need serious help here!

Ok, so like 95% of 240 drivers, my 89 SOHC has a tick and rattle that were until recently only present during start up. That all changed about a month ago when my rattle was present constantly during low rpms. I simply figured that it was just about time to do the timing chain job, though I thought it odd that I needed too since this motor was rebuilt by the previous owner. Well today things took a turn for the worse. Started her up today and the rattle was much louder and apparent till about 3000 rpm, whereas it had previously gone away at about 1000-1200 rpm. I double checked the oil to make sure it hadn't somehow leaked out, but it was fine. I figured that timing chain tensioners were now shot and that this weekend I would do the chain. Well I drove the car about 50 miles today during which time it was noisy, but there was no loss of power or any other negatives. That is until I went to pull onto my street coming home. The car suddenly died and the oil light came on. Well this freaked the shit out of me and I damn near shit my pants. I tried starting it back up and it did no problem, still rattley as hell. Getting home, I checked the oil level again, but it was still fine. I now believe that my engine's problem is the oil pump, not the timing chain. I really need advice here guys, as this is my daily driver. Please respond ASAP! Thanks

my timing chain started doing that too, first it would just rattle at startup, then just recently right before i replaced it it rattled at 3k too. My advice would be to do the timing chain job yourself as it can only get worse, it takes a good weekend but you save lots of money over taking it to a shop. if theres any problems after that then check the oil pressure and replace the oil pump.

Are you sure it isnt just the oil pump, because the rattle may have been connected to a lack of pressure, I would think timing chain too, if the car hadn't suddenly turned off today along with the light coming on. Come on guys, I really don't have time to do this myself, so I need to know which it is so I won't have to pay for both jobs. All help is appreciated!

Come on guys, I need help here, I need confirmation on what it is. I was thinking today that it's probally the timing chain and maybe a chunk of the tensioner got sucked to the oil pump screen, causing it to temporarily clog, leading to the shut off yesterday. Does this seem reasonable?
