Humming noise on start ups...got video

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_sLjXkQh8w[/ame]

thats a video of under my hood on start ups, and about maybe halfway in the video you'll hear a loud humming noise. Definitely coming from the front of the car. It is driving me crazy and is embarrasing.

Any ideas on what it is?

Thanks in advance

power steering pump......just a guess. Could be a lot of things. Try having a friend start the car and see if you can get a better idea of where it's coming from and go from there. You can also use a long screwdriver as a make shift stethoscope to pinpoint noises. Good luck.

My s14 does that when she's first started up in the morning and when she's really cold. It makes that sound when you pull your foot off the clutch, right?

sounds like a glazed clutch...
does it do this when u release the clutch to shift? or only on start up?

have someone start it a few times.. and keep your ear right next to the motor..

Sorry guys don't think its that cause I have an automatic. So maybe it is ps related. Friend of mine said he thought it was a purge valve when I told
him about it, but he was never around to actually there to hear it.

Thanks

Oh yeah one question though...if its ps related...hoe come it doesn't do it on all start ups. The pump is belt driven, so I figured it should happen all the time if its shot. Also never hear anything when I make turns.

that screeching sound when the car is turning on sounds like the starter is going bad.

Kinda hard to tell bad microphone....Could either be starter or a belt about to snap or a pully making funny noises. Have someone start the car while you hear where its coming from.

Edit: when belts get worn out they stretch the slack will make a wierd noise as the slack gets tacken away on start up because it goes from hanging with slack to spinning. Like it "chirps" on the pully sounds kinda like taking a peice on rubber across a wood floor kinda.

Hmm okay...I had someone start today while I listened and it sounded like it was coming from the back of the motor. I'll try it a couple more times tommorow and see if I can come up with anything new.

Its not a belt or starter related. My s14 makes the EXACT same noise and like I said, it only happens when the motor is really cold. It makes no sound when I start it up with my foot on the clutch, but when I let out it makes that noise once or twice.

I realize the OP doesn't have a stick, but the noise is identical. Its somewhere near the back of the motor or in the tranny.
