I see a ton of these intake adapters on EBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1826591397&r=0&t=0
They're basically just an aluminum adapter that bolts onto the throttle body and a cone filter. So, are they worth the $20 or whatever they're going for? Or should I just get a real intake? |

It technically bolts onto the end of the mass airflow sensor. Then you slap a 3" cone filter (that one looks cotton gauze-ish) right where your stock intake box is. You'll have to remove all that crap.
I would say don't buy it for one reason if you have a s14. There is a little sensor in the stock airbox that has to go into the airstream, and with those, you can't put it in the airstream, and you get the check engine light. I dunno if its the same for s13s. Open your filter box, and look for a horseshoe loop with a transistor looking thing in it. If its not there, go for it... buy away. Any aftermarket filter is better than cardboard OEM fram shit. But if you have the money, you should buy a real intake. The sound it makes is worth 1/2 the cost alone <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]() -Jeff

1) The little sensor in the stock airbox doesn't have to be in the airstream. Let it dangle in the engine bay, and it'll still be happy.
2) S13's have it, too, except for early '89. 3) The ECU doesn't really pay much attention to it, anyway. You could probably just cut the wires and throw it away (UNVERIFIED, don't try this at home) without the ECU getting upset enough to throw a code. 4) I'd bet that a filter attached directly to the MAFS would make some noise, too. And it's only half the cost of the half the cost that the noise is worth, for those that think it's worth half the cost of the "real" intakes <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> |

wait, on the other hand I believe Speedalliance.com is selling those for $12 + shipping? I believe OBX does have a version with the air temp sensor fitting. I will ask chris to confirm.
btw. I'm also selling my adapter for $5 + shipping (but theres a nasty hold drilled in it for the sensor). <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]() |

I bought one. It does make the same noise as other cars I hear with intakes. It seems to make a mild improvement. If you have an S13 you'll need to buy a small breather for the AIC hose, it comes off the Exhuast manifold. I picked one up at Autozone for $10. Also, you'll need to fabricate some sort of support bracket for the filter because it will hang down too low and bang against the innner fender.
I asked the guy to send me a silver filter and he sent me a blue anodized one which looks kind of tacky in my red engine bay. Anyone want to trade a silver one filter for a blue one, it's only about 2 weeks old. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]() Good Luck! |

This filter and MAFS adaptor would probably work better if you were using cold air instead of hot engine bay air. Try ducting air from in front of the radiator or from the wheel well.
I am not sure what is possible since I have not done it myself (yet) but I am sure there is a cold air source somewhere. That's when the real gains happen (still only slightly more than marginal, but hey). Chuck
