The coating, which Tokyo-based Nissan Motor Co. says is the first of its kind in the world, contains elastic resin, similar to a rubbery surface, and can repair itself of slight scratches caused by car-washing, off-road driving and fingernails.
Sounds good, when can I buy it in a rattle can format??

That is one thing I've noticed, first I noticed it on the infiniti cars, I see orange peel and I was disappointed, than when I was washing my g/f's brand new civic, i saw orange peels too.

Here's the interesting part, I work on BMW's a lot, and I notice that they have it too, best of all, if you look close enough Porsche have orange peel on the factory pain too!!!

I think the orange peel effect has to do with either a more efficient way of paint or a more durable paint or maybe a more durable clear coat.

Most of the car manufacturers mentioned in the above post use PPG paints. For transplants (especially Nissan), PPG has most of the market share. Personally I don't like OEM PPG paints, I like their aftermarket refinishes, much better quality IMO. Agian, my opinion may be biased, because I worked in the glass division there.

Clearcoat that lasts for 3 years?? hum... what would happen after 3 years? Spend money and repaint?

I agree too... after having my old car painted with ppg aftermarket paint, it definately looked better quality than an oem car (granted the painter wasnt top quality, but the paint itself was sexy)...
