SR Backfire

sorry for the noobness but i was wondering if backfire was bad for the engine... i hav an sr swap in my 92 240 with full 3 inch piping for the exhaust (strait pipe too)... when i stay in the same gear for a while (20 seconds maybe) not pressing on the gas my car will backfire really loud... really really loud... i never really had a chance to look back there so i dont know if fire was coming out or what... anddddd... how do you get tht pop thing you see on race cars?... thanks

Back firing normally means you're running too rich. It's unburnt fuel that makes it out of the cylinder.

The noise you hear from race cars is an ignition misfiring system. Get a rev limiter and drive around all day at redline. You'll hear all kinds of pops.

Usually means running rich. I would just get a dyno and get it tuned. A well tune car shouldn't back fire at all. Or thats what we all hope for.

From my experience just about any motor with a large free flowing exhaust will backfire during engine breaking. Engines lean out during engine breaking because the fuel is not needed though there is enough to cause rich exhaust gas which will burn in the exhaust causing a backfire. There are a couple factors that can make the backfire worse such as a leak in the exhaust system, sticking injectors, high resistance in the ignition system causing the fuel not to burn completetly
