Inverted tude vs. Non-inverted

What are the advantages and drawbacks of having an inverted tube design on coilovers over non-inverted tubes?

Advantages as claimed by the different manufacturers:

* more horizontal stability for suspension
* more overall stability and feel for driver

Real-world drawbacks:

* higher cost
* poor design, some inverted shocks actually have less stability than upright ones
* higher failure rate, some may not be as reliable under extreme track use

If you have the money for it, go for it. Just make sure you address some of the drawbacks before you invest.
