Question Loose Shifter

Okay guys, my friend Holly just got a 1990 240sx Fastback, and it's ****in awesome because now I get to play around with one, without actually having to buy it! WOOT!... Okay here's what I've noticed is wrong so far...

The shifter is damn loose, it shifts okay but it just wobbles like hell, which I know is going to be a problem in the future. For some reason the center console is pretty warm too, much warmer than the other 240 coupe I drove. Another annoying problem is strange sounds coming when you turn the wheel. I assume the power steering is going bad, but the engine is pretty messed up (burning oil and going through gas very fast) so I assume we're going to do a swap pretty soon. So basically here's my questions:

Why is the shifter so sloppy?
Why would the car burn through gas/oil so fast?
What's up with the power steering...
Would a engine swap with a full clip fix the last two issues mentioned?

-Thanks in advance...

1. because it's a stock shifter. get a B&M and it won't be sloppy.
2. blown headgasket.. bad rings.. leaky injectors.. oil leaks.. etc etc. Any number of reasons.
3. could be PS system is low on fluid. Did you happen to check it? Could also be a shitty belt for the PS system. could be a number of things!
4. definitely maybe. a swap wouldn't replace your steering rack, if that is indeed the problem, but it would replace the PS pump (more likely than not), and you'd be forced to insure the system is full of PS fluid.

Also: Nissans use DEXRON III ATF as PS fluid.
