Braking in Reverse?
When I brake my car in reverse, I hear a horrible rubbing moan from the back drivers side wheel. When I brake in a forward motion everything sounds fine and normal?
Are the rear brakes only applied in reverse braking?

All of your brakes are applied when you apply your brakes. Your brake pads could be rubbing your sensor, inspect, or have someone inspect your brakes.

Yes theres a good chance your rear pads are gone or pretty close....change them now....dont buy the cheapest stuff from your local parts store..you will get brake dust everywhere around your rims........

I usually stay away from Autozone cheap crap and just get brand name stuff. I am a firm believer of the, "you get what you pay for.." policy.

my car does this too, I checked the pads by removing the rear caliper and theres still meat left on the pads. One of the wear indicators was loose so I thought maybe that was the cause of the noise (removed wear indicator), but the sound of metal rubbing is still present when going in reverse and braking.

I have the same problem where it makes the same noise, but I also still have plenty of meat left. Is yours an S14 too?

When you brake while going forward, weight is transferred to the front end. When you brake going backward, weight is transferred to the rear end.
What you're hearing may not be related to the brakes at all. When you have that much suspension travel in the rear it may be a sign that some other suspension part is groaning. |

Check the bolts on your calipers also, make sure they are torqued down. Ive seen one bolt on a caliper loose causing it to move when brakes were applied in only one direction. Make sure everything is connected correctly and torqued down.
Even a brake place can mess that up so I would double check after you take it to them. |

i've got a problem that sounds like yours. my driver side ebrake spring is weak and every once in a while when i back up it doesn't release the ebrake all the way so in moans till i drive it a bit. check the tension on the spring and make sure your e-brake cables arn't sticking. i'd fix mine but i've been broke and for me it's not a huge issue. good luck

My car is an s13 and I removed the pads and checked them all and reinstalled them making sure every bolt was torqued down. I know for sure its the brakes, sometimes when rest builds up on the rotors from not driving the car for a while and I go in reverse the noise is present. Its really annoying its probably the design of the s13 rear brakes.

ya its a normal thing.
its like viberation from the pad seating its not use to going in reverse i guess. and usually one side is stronger then the other. so it happens.

its the shifting of the brake pad against the caliper/rotor. when you brake normally the forward motion causes your pads to wear in a particular way (which is why brake shops suggest rotating rotors from right to left, if not directionally vented rotor). When you roll backwards its the brake pad vibrating against the rotor. Get some of the brake lube you apply to the back of the pad and it will cure it.
