Bet you cant beat this..

So i put fresh KA in my s14 last week. and how i finally had a chance to take apart my old engine with 141k...i got to tell you i didnt expect to find this.

lower chain slack side guide is simply GONE. chain has just been bouncing on the pair of bolt that guide bolts on with. i am surprized that damn chain didng bust and i didnt exactly take it easy on this engine. ... 7k all day 12kmiles loing since i got it.

Then i looked at the pickup screen, i am surprised any oil was able to get thru it. I know alot of people here just take those top guides out and call it a day but after seeing this may want to think twice.

EDIT: i didnt make it clear but it was running strong when it removed it

Crikey! So all that garbage stuffed into the oil pick up is whats left of the chain guides? What is that I am looking at in the bottom picture?

theres no way to pull the lower timing cover off without removing the head is there? When i look at the head gasket it extends to where the lower and upper timing cover meet. Im scared that if i remove that itll rip that gasket to pieces.

constant rattle except when you are at WOT. actually now that i think about it its not constant, it will rattle then dissapear then come right back. when driving or parket up to about 3k.. after that i think only reason i cant hear it is exhaust noise takes over.

and no you dont have to take the head off. But you will need to remove the pan to clear oil pick up( lower cover has to come forward off the oil pump drive and if pan is still on you cant move it forward any.

heh, thats what mine looked like inside when I got it. I cleaned the oil pan out, put a new chain guide on, and its been running like a champ the last 5k miles. WeST drove it with no timing chain guides all the way from NJ, if I remember correctly.

KAs are beasts.

It won't. I've done numerous chain jobs with just pulling the covers.
