Spring break KA swap (warning 56Kers)

Yes yes so we swapped my old 91 KA (171k+drinks oil too much) with a lower mielage 95 KA... since im going ka-t soon.
Took us 2 days total.
the swap went smooth and was actually pretty straight forward.
along the way, we decided to junk the emission stuff...
well pictures can tell you the story better...
here ya go

4 hours after we started.

notice the emission crap? we junked em...
we went from that... to only 3 vacuum lines:
1 is for FPR vacuum line, and the other 2 went into the charcoal canister. thats it. say bye bye to emissions.

we took off the intake manifold on both KA. this is a picture we took from the 91 upper intake manifold.. we couldnt figure out why they put that butterfly thingy inside of the manifold....
the solution? we used the s14 upper intake manifold (s14 upper intake manifold doesnt have that butterfly thingy. i guess if they ditched it in the later model, then its better without it)

8 hours later.. the s14 KA was ready to be dropped back into my car.
my buddy's wife was making sure that we got all of the tranny bolts tightened.

next day: the swap is done. timed it, fill it up with oil and coolant. and off i went driving around.

240_keyy's white hatch (SR, 14psi) in the back ground.

I am now one step closer to ka-t. I just have to wait for the JWT ECU (i sent the ecu 2 weeks ago) to come in and I can go ahead and put everything together.

the KA runs smooth... we did a compression test and we got 170-165-165-165.
I can also feel an extra ~10rwhp gain (according to my butt dyno) throughout the powerband in this KA.

i will post more stuff when the ka-t is done... soon

conclusion:
s14 block and head
s14 upper intake manifold
s13 lower intake manifold
s13 exhaust manifold
no emmissions
only 3 vacuum hoses
s13 distributor

what are these emissions systems/vacum hoses you'er talking about? They aren't necessary?!? And why are you taking them off? Is it to gain hp or just to clean up the looks of your engine?

restrictions... besides.. the engine bay looks a lot cleaner now and more space. + I can now reach the top most tranny bolt easily

s13 valve cover and s14 valve cover is different.
it looks the same.. but the s14 valve cover only have 2 bolts in the center of the cover while the s13 has 3 bolts in the center.. oh.. and s14 cover has one bolt way behind in the center while s13 doesnt.
so yea.. its a little different. it will fit if you put it the other way oround but you wont be able to put all of the bolts in it. (you wont be able to use 2 bolts)

glad to see the swap went great.....supposedly the butterflys in the intake help the S13 KA to idle more smoothly, yet somehow the S14 one doesn't need it ....anyway,gotta post your KA-T progress(once you've started the project of course)

thanks man
but yea we put the tranny/engine in as a whole.. we did that part with 4 people
1 person under the car lining up the tranny, 2 person holding the motor to positioned it.. and 1 person operating the engine hoist. took us 15 minutes to do. pretty easy.
oh and that engine hoist.. we borrowed it from our friend
pulling the motor out.. you can prolly do it by yourself.. but you can definately do it with just 2 people..

Akkkk, stripped bolts always suck and kill more effective production time. How did you end up getting it out anyway? The whole swapped seemed liked fun! Good luck with your future plans

the butterflys are to increase low end torque. restriction generaly increases torque, as in stock air box vs. short ram. the butterflys close at low rpms, restricting the airflow, raising torque, and open at higher rpms, for better top end. a few honda motors has them as well, B18C's do i know for sure.

Is there anyway to replace them or machine them for higher flow? Ya know like high flow TB plates?

i doubt it, they are really an openning as much as something that just gets in the way. when they are open, there isnt much resistance, mostly i would say from the rod they are attached to. if you could make that rod smaller/sleeker, i guess it could help. a plate turned on its side isnt creating much restriction by its self, it would seem.

honda guys kill them, just make them stay open all the time, so i dont know what the best solution is.

maybe? I was just thinking that I bet the B/F's can be machined to be less obtrusive at higher RPM's....won't make a big difference though, really just more for bragging rights and a little extra...
