![]() ok all you zilvia people, i hope you can help me out here. so i finally got my redtop sr running after figureing out that the CAS was shit. anyway that problem is fixed. so heres my questions. the boost doesnt come on till about 3500 rpm, i think this is a lot of lag for what im runnin with but im not sure. also it wont build boost unless im driving it. ie like if its in neutral and i rev it there is no boost being built up and my bov will not blowoff. bov works when under driving load but does flutter some. it is not recirculated. so here is my setup.
redtop sr stock t25 greddy fmic megan manifold greddy turbo elbow espelir dp apexi n1 catback greddy hotpipe w/bov turboxs dual stage boost controller nismo adjustable fpr walbro 255lph i am running the lower port on the throtle body directly to the bov. is that bad/wrong? the little top port is going to the fpr with a T for my defi boost gauge. and the large top port is going to the boost controller. is this set up incorect? when driving around town im showing 20inhg of vac i pretty much have to get on it to get it into boost. i guess im just wondering if some is seriously wrong. i thought that the boost would come on way quicker. please try to answer some of these Q's for me. you guys are great. thanks. mike |

alright the bottom port goes to the cannister if u still have it if not block it off the top big one goesto the blow off dont t it just go straight there and the other one is the fuel pressure regulator

ok yeah i figured that much out. i did T it though cause i dont have a port on the turbo or piping to run to my boost controller. that was really the least of my concerns though. im still wondering why the boost is coming on so late in the rpm range and also why im reading in vacume 80% of the time. any help would be sweet. i know someone on this board must have an answer. thanks.

![]() u replaced the CAS, correct? check ignition timing. When timing is retarded it does not build boost well sum cases it wont boost period. also free revving an SR unless u floor it wont build boost on a stand still.

thanks man, yeah i just bought a timing light today and am going to check the timing on it tomorrow. i did switch the lines to the boost controller and bov around and blocked the lower port on the throttle body. it deffinately helped. so just checking? the timing should be 15 deg. btdc right? thanks guys for the info. any other suggestions would be great. thanks. mike |

let me know if the timing was off or not. also do you know the procedure for setting base ignition timing?

im pretty sure that the base ignition timing is right. i set it up via the info on heavythrottle. #1 at tdc of compression stroke, cams pointed away from each other marks lined up insert cas. go from there. after i did that the car fired right up, runs good, idles good, just a lot of lag. i have to weld the flange on my hotpipe though. whoever built it at phase2motortrend dint weld it in the right spot so i cant get the flange tight enough with the bov on it. i think im leaking boost right there. im also thinking that might be the cause of my bov fluttering. its a greddy type rs so it should be solid when it goes off. sounds like shit right now though. any other help would be great guys. thanks again.

ok so heres a new problem for you all. im all of a sudden getting a noise from my turbo i think, whenever it boosts it sounds like a rattle or highpitched fart noise i dont really know how to describe it. im fearing that the center bearing or bushing on the t-25 is blown. it started to make this noise right after what i think was a major compressor surge. anybody got ideas on this one? thanks in advance.

![]() did u set timing with the timing light. at 15 degrees. if the timing is retarded the turbo will not build boost and flutter.
here is the procedure. after you have stabbed the cas properly right 1 let your car warm up to operating temp right? 2. find a old spark plug wire to put between the coil and the spark plug so u can put the timing light probe on. 3. start car back up make sure it is back to operating temp then pull the tps connector off. 4 rev the car 3 times to put the car in timing mode. 5. when u shine the light on the crank pulley point str8 at it from up top u will see about 6 marks if not move the cas until u see them. 6. once u see them each mark represents 5 degrees. 1 mark to the left represents 5 atdc 2 mark represnts 0 degrees full tdc 3 mark is 5 and the 4th is 10 then the 5 one is 15 u want to set your ignition timing to 15. once u lock the cas on 15 tighten it back up and make sure it did not go off. this should cure ya problem.

when u look at the marks the one to the furthest left is 5atdc the far right one is 20 degrees u want to put it on 5th one when counting from left to right which represents 15 degrees

thanks guys, thats a help for sure, unfortunately im pretty sure that i blew my turbo last night. it makes a noise that sounds like a combo of bearing failure and exhaust leak. also switched the lines around for my bov and boost controller. boost started building at about 2700 rpm befor turbo blew. now when i rev it in addition to the noise described above i can hear like puffing or fluttering coming from my apexi filter. i can only guess what that is or if its because of the turbo. thanks again. keep it going.

Wow, this is freaky, I was looking through the forums for this problem and here it is and its recent too, damn thats awesome.
I have a blacktop SR20DET and it builds boost late and flutters past 5000rpm so yeah, everyone was telling me to get a new turbo, but if its just timing, you guys saved me a couple grand. So I'll let you guys know how it all goes and misfitfreaks81, pm me and we'll try to work on this together. Cheers, JQ |

thanks street_white180sx. im gonna do the timing tomorrow (wed) after work. i have a rebuild kit on the way reguardless. i will try the timing first though and hopefully that will fix it. im not looking forward to having to pull my turbo and all related shit. i will keep this thread updated. thanks again.
jq889 i will hit you up when i figure this shit out. let me know if you get somethin to work as well. mike |

ok update time. so i checked the timing tonight and just as i figured it was dead on at 15 degrees. i moved it to about 18 degrees and same shit happens. so i moved it back to 15 and left it there. im pretty sure that its the turbo. if i rev it while under the hood it sounds like a combo of exhaust leak and turbo failure. i have a sick feeling that my mani might be cracked. its megan so we shall see. i have only drivin it maybe 200 miles and if its cracked already im gonna freak the fuck out. also there is a high pitched squeal from the turbo when its up near 4500 rpm. i have a rebuild kit coming on friday so i will tear it down over the weekend and let every body know what it was.

u know them mani are only cosmetic one of my friends put one on his silvia and the car actually felt slower. you lose torque as well. i rather stick wit the stock manifold. also how cud u set your car on 18 degrees what type of timing light are you using. because i am 100 percent sure the ignition timing is off on your car if it feels sluggish and wont build boost. also an exhaust leak will kill spool time as well. but not that flutter noise u were talkin about thats timing related if i am quite sure.

timing is dead on. set it back to 15 degrees. thats not the source of the noise. im 100% sure of that. befor the turbo blew and after i rerouted the vacume lines it built boost just like it should and was quite responsive. to answer your question about how i set it to 18 degrees, that was approximate. inbetween the mark for 15 and the mark for 20. rebuild kit will be here tomorrow. i will update as soon as the turbo is rebuilt. if the mani is cracked i will most likely be going with a Tomei Expreme. thanks.

you more than likely jsut have an exhasust leak befor ethe turbo
you already answerd that yourslef, that is a super common problem with the turbo to manifold flange. The bolts probally came lose and now it leaks, that gives you all the symptoms you have stated. |

your gettin like a screamin scraping type noise right? if so thas a definate turbo to manifold gasket on the way out ,bin a culprit twice. bought a spare turbo because of that shit come to find out it was the damn gasket.

u cant build boost at stand still in neutral . and you shouldnt be revving your motor that high just to here your bov at neutral. it is possible to do but not reccomended.
