Heres what I did and now I can't rev past 4k
Edit - Problem fixed if you have similar problem read my 3rd or 4th post.
S14 w/ s13 blacktop There are tons of threads like this one all with different diagnosis because no one really knows why it happened. Well my car was running decent till today it won't go past 4k. It is probably my MAFS, but anyways. Today I was using CRC Intake/throtle body cleaner, I removed my intake clamps and sprayed a good amount down there, and sprayed some down the throttle butterfly. I also removed my MAFS and I have read don't F with the two very thin wires. Well I touched one and it moved VERY VERY SLIGHTLY. Enough to see and then I didn't touch it anymore, the connection is still intact. I also think I got some CRC cleaner onto the wire connection. I drove and it won't rev past 4000. I can slowly make my way up to 4000 and at 4000 i guess it is similar to what a rev limiter feels like, it basically cuts my fuel if i go above it so i start sputtering, even if i go really light on the throttle. If I WOT it, sometimes it won't make it to 4k before it sputters (like 3.5k i guess) I don't think that the tiny little alteration in the wire will cause this but maybe it would if that wire got wet, would drying it out help at all or is this MAFS fucked? And if it is... lol... I'd be WTB a new MAFS if anyone has one (z32?) Last edited by Ess14; 05-02-2006 at 05:26 PM.. |

You mentioned sputtering but not smoke. Is there any smoke? ( boost leak?) Check the ecu for codes, If there isn't any, force a mafs malfunction, clear the code then plug in the mafs. ECU should bounce back after that.(recalibrate)
If, you did get the something wet with TB cleaner it should dry pretty quickly. I have three MAFs you can try. 1sohc, 1redtop and 1z32n62, 1 of the three can be purchased for the price of a full tank of premium93.

i am having the same problem and i tried different mafs but no luck but before i put the motor in i also used carb cleaner on the butterfly and sprayed some into the intake manifold. i wonder if that could mess something up?

This may just be speculation but carb cleaners, and intake cleaners cause hard restarts. Meaning, if you keep the engine running while using it, you'll be fine.
Otherwise carb\throttle cleaner should not permanently disable your engine. The 4k problem sounds like a boost leak, not saying it can't be a mafs problem. Also disconnect a coupler before the intercooler, but after the turbo start your car rev to whatever, tell me what you get. Check your pipe work for leaks, if you don't have a boost leak tester, disconnect all couplers then reconnect\retighten.

During the cleaning, one O ring connecting my IC piping to my TB got Fed up and it wouldn't tighten as much as I would definitely like it to but it seemed as if it was on there pretty well. I'm going to check that out today and get a new ring. I know a leak there would affect the reving but I don't know about limiting it to 4k...
It doesn't seem as if it would be with any of my other hoses/piping, as I really only touched the ones mentioned. Sorry cotbu but what do you mean by a coupler. I noticed the 4k issue while driving and didn't notice or rather check for any smoke. It didn't smell any different. I also don't think it's a boost leak because I can hit boost at lower RPMs and I can't get past 4k even if my boost is null. This happened late and I haven't checked if I'm limited in neutral. I will do so when I get off work. Thoughts? |

UPDATE: FIXED -- for anyone searching and has a similar problem.
I immediately found a loose hose clamp from the IC to TB as stated above. I re-connected and... DAMN!!!! That Cleaner did some serious wonders... I must have had a baaaad coating of gunk because my car runs like it is supposed to now and it pulls like a champ.. Before I had sputtering and something like misfiring all the way up the powerband, now it pulls smooth and even - except for that boost fall off, but it will eventually get tweaked. Maybe during the re-clamping of my intake piping I fixed something was previously loose or the maf connection benefitted from getting it soaked in cleaner., but something really fixed my problems. Whicked fun fuckin drive today. Peace |
